Job Category:
Faculty
Employment Type:
Regular
Job Profile:
Assistant Professor
Job Summary:
The McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research, in the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH), is searching for a full-time tumor virology faculty position at the tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor level. We are seeking exceptional candidates whose research is focused on understanding how viruses cause human cancer, using basic, mechanistic studies of how viruses interact with their host cells to infect, persist and induce cancer.
Candidates should demonstrate a proven record of studying one or more tumor viruses and demonstrate that they have the potential to establish a productive, extramurally funded research program. Candidates also need to describe how they will contribute to mentoring and teaching undergraduate, graduate and professional students in the field of virology, as this is fundamental to our academic mission. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in professional, university, and community service appropriate to rank. The new hire for this position will move into an extremely strong, supportive research environment with an unusually large, highly interactive and collaborative community of virologists. This includes many tumor virologists, a priority area already bolstered by several recent hires. These tumor virologists also participate in and benefit from the Human Cancer Virology Program within the University's NCI-designated comprehensive Carbone Cancer Center, and from our partnerships with the UW Institute for Molecular Virology, the private Morgridge Institute for Research, and other campus units. We are looking for candidates who will interact productively with these and other faculty in this highly collegial and collative academic environment.
  • This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.

  • Applicants for this position will be considered for the following titles: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.

  • This vacancy is being announced simultaneously with JR#10005923; please note that only one vacancy exists. Having two job postings allows the School of Medicine and Public Health to consider candidates with a variety of qualifications and research interests.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Train students and postdocs to become independent cancer researchers.
  • Engage with other faculty in the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center to support the highly collaborative intra- and inter- programmatic cancer research efforts that contribute to the center's success.
  • Establish and maintain an extramurally funded research program in tumor virology.

Department:
School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Oncology, McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research
The central mission of the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research is twofold:
1. To pursue outstanding research programs directed toward understanding the causes and biology of cancer and the factors that regulate normal and neoplastic growth and differentiation.
2. To provide training of the highest quality in basic cancer research at the graduate and postdoctoral levels.
While these two goals represent the cornerstone of our activities, we also seek to provide undergraduates and medical students with a foundation in basic cancer biology and to serve the public and scientific community through our activities for national and international organizations. You can see more on our training and instruction here.
The current staff of the McArdle Laboratory numbers approximately 165. The 21 faculty and 9 emeritus faculty lead 24 research groups that include 65 graduate students/postdoctoral fellows, 35 undergrads, and 36 scientific and administrative staff members.
Compensation:
Negotiable, 12 month
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3 years minimum post-doctoral experience in tumor virology is preferred.
  • Candidates should display a productive record of established scholarship of national and international significance in tumor virus biology. Areas of particular interest to this search include but are not limited to understanding how human tumor viruses cause cancer, links between viruses and antiviral defenses including intrinsic, innate, or adaptive immunity, and the use of in vitro and/or in vivo models for studying human tumor viruses.

For an appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank on tenure track, candidates will meet criteria established by the department and as outlined in the UW Divisional Committee guidelines for promotion or appointment to Associate or Professor on the tenure track.
Education:
PhD in virology, oncology, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, genetics or closely related field required by start date.
How to Apply:
To apply for this position, please click on the "I am a current employee" button or "I am not a current employee" button under Apply Now. You will be prompted to upload the following documents:

  • Cover letter briefly describing your qualifications and experience as it relates to this role
  • Statement of research (maximum of 3 pages) describing current and future directions that include a brief description of teaching philosophy
  • Three (3) sample publications.

Failure to submit complete application materials will result in ineligibility for this position.
Please note, there is only one attachment field. You must upload all of your documents in the attachment field.
The application reviewers will be relying on written application materials to determine which qualified applicants will advance in the recruitment process. We will notify selected applicants to participate further in the selection process directly. References will be requested of final candidates.
