What is a program manager?

Program managers are professionals responsible for overseeing multiple related projects within an organization, ensuring they align with strategic goals and deliver expected outcomes. They coordinate the efforts of project managers, manage resources, set priorities, and address risks and issues that arise across the program. Unlike project managers who focus on individual projects, program managers take a broader view, ensuring that all projects within a program work together effectively to achieve long-term business objectives.

What does a program manager do?

The job of a program manager is to plan, organize, and coordinate management programs or external programs for a business or institution. As a program manager, your duties vary depending on the type of organization for which you work, but many of the responsibilities for this role are similar or overlap. You typically supervise numerous associates and analysts who help prepare data and assessments about current programming and how it can be improved. You help to implement new programs for employees or customers and promote them through HR or outreach coordinators and marketing professionals. You also assess individual projects and how they interact with one another.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, strategic planning abilities, and a relevant degree, often supported by certifications like PMP or Agile. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Asana is essential for tracking progress and managing resources. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you motivate teams and navigate complex stakeholder environments. These competencies ensure that programs are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges program managers face when coordinating cross-functional teams?

Program Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning priorities across diverse teams, managing conflicting stakeholder expectations, and ensuring clear communication among departments with different workflows. Navigating these challenges requires strong negotiation and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to build consensus and foster collaboration. Successful Program Managers proactively establish regular check-ins, promote transparency, and adapt strategies to keep projects on track and maintain team engagement.

Description
WHO WE ARE
Come join the company at the center of how the world adopts AI securely. Cyera's mission is to give enterprises the confidence to embrace AI safely - deciding exactly what it can see and do as it reaches deeper into the business. We started by solving the hardest problem in data security: finding and securing data faster and more precisely than anyone thought possible. That foundation is now the essential AI trust infrastructure for the Fortune 1000. We're hiring mission-driven talent to put those leaders at the center of our story.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Cyera is seeking a Program Manager, Marketing to support and scale our marketing organization driving program and project management for Product Marketing, Integrated Campaigns, Strategic Events, and other marketing functions. You'll partner with marketing leaders and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure every major initiative, from product launches to campaigns to events, run on time and in service of our broader marketing and organizational goals.
This role in particular, will partner closely with the Product Marketing Team and several cross-functional stakeholders to plan and execute product launches from kickoff through post-launch review. You'll bring structure and discipline to how Cyera introduces new products and features, refining processes, timelines, templates, and stage gates so every launch runs smoothly, on time, and with clear cross-functional alignment.
This is a high impact role for someone who thrives on managing multiple concurrent, high priority projects in a fast paced environment, and who is energized by bringing structure, clarity, and measurable outcomes to a growing marketing organization.
This position is hybrid in our St. Louis, Chicago, or New York office.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Serve as the primary program manager for the marketing organization, providing project management support across Product Marketing, Integrated Campaigns, Strategic Events, and other marketing functions.
  • Own the end-to-end program management of product launches, from planning through execution and post launch reviews, and drive continuous improvement of the New Product Introduction (NPI) process.
  • Track and report on launch status, milestones, risks, and outcomes, keeping leadership and stakeholders informed throughout each initiative.
  • Facilitate cross-functional meetings and working sessions, ensuring clear ownership, decisions, and next steps across every workstream.
  • Manage timelines, dependencies, and approvals across multiple concurrent high-priority launches in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Establish and maintain consistent project management processes, templates, and tools across the marketing organization, identifying gaps and implementing scalable systems that improve efficiency and speed.
  • Maintain the marketing team's project management tool, ensuring all projects, timelines, and statuses are accurately tracked to provide real-time visibility into the team's work.
  • Ensure the marketing team's work aligns to overarching marketing and organizational goals and priorities, and oversee progress and KPIs tied to achieving those goals.

Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 2+ years of experience in program management for a marketing team, preferably in a high-growth environment.
  • Proven experience project or program managing high-priority initiatives in a very fast-paced environment, with a track record of hitting deadlines under shifting priorities.
  • Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders to plan and execute shared initiatives.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple concurrent initiatives, competing deadlines, and shifting priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to drive alignment among stakeholders with differing priorities.
  • Comfortable working with project management tools (e.g., Asana) to manage timelines, dependencies, and deliverables.
  • Ability to synthesize complex, cross-functional information into clear plans, timelines, and status updates for stakeholders at all levels.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and comfortable navigating ambiguity in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in product marketing, or working closely with a product marketing team, is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with product launch frameworks and New Product Introduction (NPI) processes.
  • Experience building marketing operating rhythms (roadmaps, planning cycles, OKR/KPI tracking)
  • Experience with project management tools such as Asana.
  • Experience with project status reporting, including preparing executive-level project status updates.
  • Excellent communication skills with high attention to detail.
