How to Get a Job in Program Management
Program managers typically have previous experience as a project manager or in a similar role. Most program managers have a bachelor’s degree in business or related field. The exact requirements for a program management job may vary from position to position, but you should be familiar with the organization’s mission and products as well as the specific needs listed in the job description. If a company is looking for a program manager for a specific department, experience working in that area is an obvious boon.
What is the difference between Program Management vs Project Management?
| Aspect | Program Management | Project Management |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Oversees multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectives | Manages individual projects to meet specific goals |
| Scope | Broader, involving multiple projects and stakeholders | Narrower, focused on specific deliverables |
| Responsibilities | Aligns projects with organizational strategy, manages interdependencies | Plans, executes, and closes individual projects |
| Certifications | PMP, PgMP often preferred | PMP commonly required |
While both roles require strong organizational and leadership skills, program management focuses on coordinating multiple projects to achieve strategic goals, whereas project management concentrates on delivering specific project outcomes efficiently.

Job description
The duty of this organization is to enable our Customers' ongoing Mission Readiness. From the moment they say '"go" until the contract is fulfilled. We are only successful when the customer's mission is successful.
Mission Readiness is the post-production shared services organization for Anduril. This team supports the Business Lines and Divisions throughout the lifecycle of their product, from initial sustainment concept through delivery, installation, operation, repair and return. These service offerings also include providing technical publications, training, customer support, connectivity services and other value-added services. To the degree the Business elects, we accept the delegated responsibility for upfront and continued delivery of the committed service solutions. This team endeavors to provide the Business Lines, as our internal customers, shared mission services that are more efficient and cost effective than if they chose to provide them directly. By offering mission support capabilities and capacity that are not "core" to the Business, the Business can focus resources on addressing the next big need while we ensure existing commitments are met.
We are looking for an Senior Manager, Logistics Program Management to join our rapidly growing Deployments team in Costa Mesa, CA. This is a new management role responsible for leading a team of Logistics Program Managers and for building the central functional frameworks that define how logistics program management operates across Anduril. You will set the standard for how logistics CDRLs are developed, how program-level logistics execution is planned and tracked, and how best practices are codified and scaled across programs and business lines.
As the first dedicated people leader for this discipline, you will be responsible for hiring, developing, and retaining top logistics program management talent while also serving as the functional authority on logistics program management processes, tools, and standards. You will partner closely with Integrated Product Support leads, program managers, engineering, supply chain, and customer stakeholders to ensure logistics program management is executed consistently and at a high level across all programs.
We are a fast-growing company, and you will be expected to own material and important projects during your time on the team, which will have a significant impact on the company's trajectory. Anduril fosters a diverse, collaborative culture with plenty of opportunities for ownership and professional growth.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Logistics Program Managers across multiple programs and business lines, including hiring, performance management, career development, and day-to-day direction.
- Develop and institutionalize the central frameworks, processes, standards, and playbooks for how logistics program management is executed across the Deployments organization.
- Define and enforce standards for the development and delivery of logistics CDRLs, ensuring consistency, quality, and on-time delivery across all programs.
- Establish and maintain logistics program management tooling, templates, and reporting structures that enable visibility into program health, deliverable status, and resource allocation.
- Partner with Integrated Product Support leads and program managers to ensure logistics program management activities are aligned with broader sustainment strategies and program milestones.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, supply chain, quality, manufacturing, and field operations to integrate logistics program management into the broader product lifecycle.
- Influence and coordinate the preparation of proposals, business plans, proposal work statements and specifications, operating budgets, and financial terms/conditions of contract(s). Influence contract acquisitions, negotiations, and modifications.
- Act as a key point of contact for logistics program management matters with internal leadership and external customer stakeholders; lead or support program review sessions as needed.
- Drive continuous improvement across the logistics program management function by identifying gaps, implementing corrective actions, and capturing lessons learned.
- Problem solve and remove obstacles for your team and internal and external partners. Know how to think critically and engage the right teams to help.
- Communicate effectively to keep internal and external teams informed at all times. Use the necessary channels (Slack, email, meetings) to ensure stakeholders understand what needs to be accomplished and when.
- Be a team player where no task is too small. Be willing to roll up your sleeves and get the job done. Embrace the startup life.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, business/operations, supply chain, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in logistics, sustainment, or program management within the defense, aerospace, or government contracting sector, with at least 3 years in a people-management role.
- Demonstrates technical expertise and application of logistics management principles, concepts, and practices as well as leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.
- Experience working with US Military program offices and familiarity with DoD acquisition logistics frameworks (e.g., ILS, PBL, life cycle sustainment planning).
- Experience developing and delivering logistics CDRLs and other contract deliverables on DoD or government programs.
- Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to interface effectively across all levels of the organization, with customers, and with government representatives.
- Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
- Advanced degree in engineering, business, supply chain management, or related field.
- Experience managing managers or building a functional team from the ground up.
- Proven ability to build and scale processes, frameworks, and standard operating procedures for a functional discipline in a high-growth environment.
- Government proposal experience, including developing logistics volumes and basis of estimates.
- Strong ability to work in an unstructured, fast-paced environment; startup or high-growth company experience highly preferred.
- Strong outcome orientation with the ability to drive initiatives from inception to implementation and adoption. Willing and able to dive into tactical execution mode when needed to move the effort forward.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects from idea conception to execution without assistance.
- Moves fast, has a positive attitude, and can lead people directly and via influence.
