Job description

The ideal candidate in this position will be someone who is passionate about youth development, staff development, and creating memorable recreation experiences. The Recreation Program Coordinator helps develop and support before and after school programs, school break camp programs, ongoing youth activities, and special events.

This role will encourage participation, learning, and fun for Reno youth and families. The role also fosters teamwork, growth, training, and morale for our part time and permanent subordinate staff. We are looking for a collaborative professional who can oversee and assess programs, supervise and continually coach part-time staff, communicate effectively with the public and partner organizations, and contribute to a positive team environment.

We currently have one vacancy in the Parks and Recreation Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur. This is an open competitive opportunity for all qualified applicants.

Examples of Essential Functions Oversee and coordinate various operations, services, and activities of an assigned recreation program including either aquatics, indoor centers, child and youth programs, adult and youth league sports or special City events.

Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing assigned recreation program services; implement policies and procedures. Monitor program performance; recommend and implement modifications to systems and procedures. Coordinate and promote assigned recreational programs and activities; participate in recruiting, selecting, training, motivating, and evaluating assigned part-time, contractual, and volunteer employees; provide staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; evaluate assigned staff; initiate disciplinary procedures as appropriate.

Ensure proper operation and maintenance of assigned facilities. Schedule maintenance for assigned areas including cleaning, sweeping and vacuuming; maintain records and develop reports concerning recreation activities. Monitor activities for assigned recreation program; ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

Collect and account for program fees and registration; maintain appropriate financial records and prepare state and federally mandated reports. Coordinate and supervise special events; contact local corporations to sponsor and/or participate; compile and distribute statistics of special events. Assist in the coordination and promotion of City sponsored events; hire and supervise food and beverage vendors, craft vendors and entertainment; arrange for rental needs including restrooms and lighting.

Develop and maintain a handbook on special event permit processes and procedures; respond to regarding permit processes; hold special meetings to review permits; evaluate and revise policies. Promote and coordinate specific activities within the assigned recreation program; prepare program event and facility marketing material including news releases, flyers, schedules of events, pamphlets and brochures. Oversee and schedule usage of assigned facilities including halls, recreation centers, community centers, swimming pool, City parks and sports fields; provide information and assistance to users of facilities; explaining policies, rules and regulations of facility use; monitor and inspect assigned facilities after use; schedule maintenance and secure facilities.

Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness; prepare statistical reports as required. Participate in the preparation and administration of assigned budget; submit budget recommendations; monitor expenditures. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public; provide information regarding assigned recreational program area.

Perform related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application. Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by college level course work in recreation, leisure services, public administration, business administration, or a related field.

*Six months of recreation related administrative work experience beyond the one year requirement will be substituted for the college level coursework. Work Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience supporting the activities and operations of a recreation program including one year of administrative responsibility. License: Valid driver's license.

The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable. Probationary Period: Certification of Eligibles, Appointments, and Probation (Rule VII, Section 12) Classified employees who are newly hired, promoted, reclassified, transferred, or who voluntarily demote to a lower position are subject to a probation period. The only exception is if an employee chooses to voluntarily demote back to the exact job they previously held within 24 months of being promoted.
