Job description

Job Summary
As a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Step-Down) Registered Nurse at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, you will provide expert nursing care to patients with complex medical and post-surgical conditions who require intermediate-level monitoring (higher acuity than Med/Surg but lower than ICU). You will utilize telemetry and advanced interventions to manage critically ill patients and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, positive outcomes.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Monitoring: Conduct comprehensive assessments and continuously monitor telemetry data, EKG rhythms, and advanced hemodynamics.
  • Clinical Interventions: Administer high-risk medications (including cardiac drips/titration and insulin drips), manage complex intravenous lines, and operate equipment such as Alaris pumps and BiPAP.
  • Care Planning: Develop, implement, and adjust individualized care plans alongside physicians and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Patient Advocacy: Act as a primary coordinator for all care disciplines and provide compassionate support and education to patients and their families regarding their diagnosis and post-discharge needs.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate, real-time documentation within the electronic health records (EHR) system.
 
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program (Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's in Nursing).
  • Licensure: Active Virginia or Compact Multi-State RN license in good standing.
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) required (or must be willing to obtain quickly upon hire).
  • Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of recent acute care hospital experience, preferably in a step-down, ICU, or cardiac telemetry setting.
