How much do profile extrusion jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for profile extrusion in the United States is $18.85, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $21.63 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by profile extrusion operators, and how can they be addressed?

Profile extrusion operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent product quality, minimizing material waste, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. To address these, operators need to closely monitor machine settings, perform regular maintenance, and stay vigilant for signs of defects or irregularities. Effective communication with team members and supervisors is also crucial for quickly resolving production issues and ensuring smooth workflow. Ongoing training and familiarity with quality standards help operators adapt to new materials and technologies, supporting both personal growth and team efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a profile extrusion operator?

To thrive as a Profile Extrusion Operator, you need a solid understanding of extrusion processes, material properties, and quality control, typically supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with extrusion machines, measurement tools (micrometers, calipers), and possibly certifications in manufacturing or plastics processing are frequently required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for this role. These skills ensure consistent product quality, efficient production, and safe operations in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What is profile extrusion?

Profile extrusion is a manufacturing process used to create continuous shapes of plastic or other materials with a specific cross-sectional profile. In this process, raw material is melted and forced through a shaped die, forming products such as window frames, tubing, weather stripping, and custom plastic trims. The process allows for high-volume, consistent production of complex shapes. Profile extrusion is widely used in industries such as construction, automotive, and consumer goods due to its efficiency and versatility.

What is the difference between Profile Extrusion vs Profile Operator?

AspectProfile ExtrusionProfile Operator
CertificationsTypically requires technical training or certification in extrusion processesOften requires similar certifications, focusing on machine operation
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, working with extrusion machineryManufacturing settings, operating and monitoring extrusion equipment
Job ResponsibilitiesSetting up, monitoring, and adjusting extrusion machines to produce profilesOperating extrusion machines, quality checks, and ensuring smooth production

Profile Extrusion involves the technical setup and process control of extrusion machinery, while Profile Operator focuses on operating and maintaining the equipment during production. Both roles require similar skills and work environments, but Profile Extrusion emphasizes process setup and optimization.

Job description

Description

The 2nd Shift Production Supervisor oversees the daily manufacturing operations during the second shift. This role is responsible for leading extrusion line operators to meet production schedules safely and efficiently. Because this is a custom profile extrusion environment, a heavy focus is placed on monitoring quality specs, minimizing scrap during changeovers, and troubleshooting process variations to keep lines running consistently. Individual may also run lines when production dictates the need.

Shift Leadership & Operations
  • Team Management: Direct, train, and hold accountable 2nd shift personnel
  • Production Goals: Monitor and drive shift efficiency, ensuring production targets are met while minimizing downtime and material waste (scrap).
  • Shift Handoff: Conduct thorough shift-start meetings to communicate daily goals, and provide clear, detailed handoff notes to the 3rd shift supervisor regarding running jobs, material changes, or mechanical issues.
Process & Quality Control
  • Profile Inspection: Ensure running profiles strictly match engineering drawings, customer blueprints, and quality standards using calipers, micrometers, and optical comparators.
  • Setup & Changeover Support: Oversee and expedite line changeovers (die/tooling changes, material transitions, and downstream equipment calibration) to reduce setup scrap and downtime.
  • Troubleshooting: Assist operators in diagnosing and correcting common extrusion processing issues (e.g., surging, melt fractures, die lines, dimensional twisting, or cooling tank adjustments).
  • Material Integrity: Verify that resin blends, regrind ratios, and color concentrates match the Bill of Materials (BOM) before they hit the hoppers.
Safety & Maintenance
  • Safety Enforcement: Maintain a safe work environment by ensuring strict adherence to PPE requirements, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols, and machine guarding standards.
  • Equipment Care: Monitor the mechanical health of extruders, pullers, cutters, etc. Document maintenance needs and enter work orders for any issues requiring toolroom or maintenance intervention.

Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of supervisory or lead experience in a manufacturing environment, with a strong preference for plastics manufacturing; extrusion (profile, tubing, or sheet) preferred.
  • Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of single or twin-screw extruder operations, downstream equipment, and plastic resins (e.g., PVC, PP, PE, ABS).
  • Quality Skills: Ability to read and interpret manufacturing blueprints, engineering drawings, and shop orders. Proficient with standard precision measuring tools.
  • Software Proficiency: Basic computer literacy required for tracking production logs and interacting with ERP/inventory systems.
  • Schedule: Ability to work standard 2nd shift hours.
