What is profile extrusion?

Profile extrusion is a manufacturing process used to create continuous shapes of plastic or other materials with a specific cross-sectional profile. In this process, raw material is melted and forced through a shaped die, forming products such as window frames, tubing, weather stripping, and custom plastic trims. The process allows for high-volume, consistent production of complex shapes. Profile extrusion is widely used in industries such as construction, automotive, and consumer goods due to its efficiency and versatility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a profile extrusion operator?

To thrive as a Profile Extrusion Operator, you need a solid understanding of extrusion processes, material properties, and quality control, typically supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with extrusion machines, measurement tools (micrometers, calipers), and possibly certifications in manufacturing or plastics processing are frequently required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for this role. These skills ensure consistent product quality, efficient production, and safe operations in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced by profile extrusion operators, and how can they be addressed?

Profile extrusion operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent product quality, minimizing material waste, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. To address these, operators need to closely monitor machine settings, perform regular maintenance, and stay vigilant for signs of defects or irregularities. Effective communication with team members and supervisors is also crucial for quickly resolving production issues and ensuring smooth workflow. Ongoing training and familiarity with quality standards help operators adapt to new materials and technologies, supporting both personal growth and team efficiency.

Job description

Craft profiles with purpose

Imagine dialing in a Davis-Standard, selecting a 3 inch die, and watching a perfect profile emerge as downstream pullers and winders keep pace. At SpringSeal, Inc., that is the craft you will practice on our second and third shift profile lines.

Your mission

Own the process from setup to finished coil. You will configure the extruder, select dies between 2 and 4.5 inches, tune parameters, and guide material through downstream finishing while verifying that every dimension matches the print.

Key responsibilities
  • Set up and operate complete profile extrusion lines using Welex, NRM, Davis-Standard, and American Kuhne equipment.
  • Install dies, establish line settings, and stabilize processes for repeatability.
  • Run downstream equipment: pullers, cutters, winders, printers, and welders.
  • Operate Vulcan, Goodman, CDS, and RDN downstream systems and make in-process adjustments.
  • Use calipers and micrometers to check dimensions; verify against simple prints and work instructions.
What you will need
  • Minimum 2 years of profile extrusion experience.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement, blueprint reading, shop math, and following instructions.
  • Personal tools suitable for setup and adjustment tasks.
Compensation and benefits
  • Health insurance with prescription drug benefit
  • Life Insurance, ADD and Short Term Disability
  • Dental and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) with a 3 percent company contribution of gross wage
  • Vacation and PTO
Proficiencies
  • Precision measurement and hand metrology
  • Plastic extrusion experience
  • Shop math skills
  • Blueprint reading
Machines & technologies you'll use
  • Extrusion Machine

If you take pride in stable runs, crisp cuts, and profiles that measure exactly as intended, you will thrive here.
