Job description

The Cleveland Clinics Neurological Institute announces a search for a Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology. The Department is one of five departments within the Neurological Institute (the other four are the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Pain Management, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation).

In January 2027, the Neurological Institute will inaugurate a 1 million square feet, state-of-the-art  Neurologic Institute building, in Cleveland, Ohio, which will afford a once-in-a-lifetime clinical, academic, and research environment for our Department. The access to cutting edge neuroimaging, network mapping, and electrophysiology expertise within the Neurological Institute, as well as the landmark Cleveland Clinic Brain Study, are all setting the foundation for innovative interdisciplinary clinical care and discovery.

The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology is located at the Main Campus of the Cleveland Clinic and extends into the regional hospitals of Northeast Ohio. With 57 psychiatry and 26 psychology faculty as well as 52 Advanced Practice Providers and 22 social workers, the Department is one of the largest within the Neurological Institute. The Department has traditional service lines along strong outpatient psychiatry hubs, superbly  managed 200 inpatient psychiatric beds, a robust ECT service, stellar Consultation Liaison (CL) psychiatry program, and 14 integral Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs). We are rapidly growing our Psychiatric Treatment Resistant Programs and investing in Womens Behavioral Health in Northeast Ohio, and  expanding our Neuropsychiatry footprint at the Ohio, Nevada, and Florida locations.

The qualified Vice Chair for Research candidate will have the opportunity to work with nationally renowned Neurological Centers including Center for Brain Health, Epilepsy Center, Multiple Sclerosis Center, Center for Comprehensive Pain Recovery, and Center for Neurological Restoration (Movement Disorders).

The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology supports a variety of faculty career tracks, including NIH supported clinician researchers, clinician scholars, clinician educators, and master clinicians. The Department maintains nationally recognized programs in many areas of Psychiatry and Psychology, including research on DBS, TMS, ECT, lithium, ketamine and now psychedelics. Department personnel have been highly productive in running national multi-center trials and directing multiple PCORI-funded projects. Niche service lines, such as the Psychiatric Treatment Resistant Program, are poised for further clinical trials and outcome studies, which dovetail nicely with stewardship and mentorship from the Vice Chair of Research.

The Department has thriving Adult Psychiatry residency program at the Main Campus in Cleveland and in Akron, as well as fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and Health Psychology. In addition, there are the Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry (BNNP) fellowship based in Cleveland and Las Vegas, as well as the city-wide Addiction Psychiatry fellowship, of which the Cleveland Clinic is a core teaching site.

The candidate may additionally qualify for an open Director of Neuropsychiatry position within the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology, meeting the criteria for clinical neuropsychiatry    implementation and growth, leadership and  mentorship , and extramural funding.

It will be paramount that the individual possesses the skills to collaboratively promote Psychiatric research and outcomes within a dynamic system, capitalizing on strengths of the Neurological Institute. The Director will need to work closely with the Chair of the Neurological Institute, the Chair and Vice Chairs of Psychiatry and Psychology, the Vice Chair of Research and Vice Chair of Education of the Neurological Institute, and the directors of all disease-based Centers in the Neurological Institute.

To promote growth and program development of clinical research for the Department at the  Cleveland Clinic locations in Ohio, Nevada, and Florida, qualified candidates will be expected to demonstrate experience and strength in the following areas:

  • Proven leadership record and clinical contributions in the field of Psychiatry.
  • A strong history of mentoring and promoting the professional growth of faculty.
  • Track record of positive interpersonal engagement across multiple disciplines.
  • Stellar record in clinical trial design, implementation, and outcomes research

  • Record of success identifying philanthropic opportunities and cultivating key relationships to grow Psychiatry endeavors

For physician candidates, board certification in psychiatry by the ABPN or equivalent is required. We also welcome interest from PhD candidates with an accomplished record of clinical care, teaching, and research. The position includes appointment at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.
