Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to carry out assigned duties under the direction of the\r\nInvasive Fishes Program manager that pertain to the management of invasive fishes across\r\nMaryland's tidal waters and freshwater habitats (e.g., rivers and impoundment). Duties will\r\ninclude, but are not limited to, planning, coordinating, leading, and participating in research and\r\nmonitoring efforts for Northern snakehead, blue catfish, flathead catfish, and other invasive\r\nfishes (e.g., eDNA monitoring, fish telemetry, high-reward tagging projects, backpack and boat\r\nelectrofishing surveys); planning and coordinating a beneficial use project at Conowingo Dam\r\nwhere Northern snakehead and other invasive fishes are harvested and donated for public\r\nconsumption or used for scientific research; developing, coordinating, organizing, and\r\nparticipating in events with the public that promote the removals of Northern snakehead, blue\r\ncatfish, flathead catfish, and other invasive fishes; assists with report and document preparation;\r\nand administrative, organizational, and other duties in support of the Invasive Fishes Program.\r\n
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources, Invasive Fishes Program (Annapolis, MD), is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist I. The main purpose of this position is to carryout assigned duties under the direction of the Invasive Fishes Program manager that pertain to the management of invasive fishes across Maryland's tidal waters and freshwater habitats (e.g., rivers and impoundment). Duties will include, but are not limited to, planning, coordinating, leading, and participating in research and monitoring efforts for Northern snakehead, blue catfish, flathead catfish, and other invasive fishes (e.g., eDNA monitoring, backpack and boat electrofishing surveys); participating in events with the public to promote the removals of invasive fishes; analyzing, summarizing, and reporting ecological data; and administrative, organizational, and other duties in support of the Invasive Fishes Program and Freshwater Fisheries and Hatcheries Division.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:\r\nFour years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the\r\nfields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science,\r\nnatural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical\r\noceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology.\r\n\r\n\r\nNotes:\r\n1.\r\nCandidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree in biology,\r\nenvironmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management,\r\nbotany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology,\r\nfisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources\r\nmanagement related field of study from an accredited college or university for\r\nthe required experience.\r\n\r\n\r\n2.\r\nCandidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a\r\ncommissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological\r\nsciences classifications or natural resources management and biological\r\nsciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a\r\nyear-for-year basis for the required experience.\r\n\r\n
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n One year experience with fisheries sampling techniques and equipment (e.g., boat electrofishing)\r\n One year experience in boating and trailering\r\n One year experience conducting basic data analyses and report writing\r\n\r\n
