What is professional learning?

Professional learning refers to ongoing education and development activities that help individuals improve their skills, knowledge, and effectiveness in their careers. It often involves workshops, seminars, courses, or collaborative learning experiences designed to keep professionals up-to-date with the latest trends, research, and best practices in their field. Professional learning is essential for career growth, adaptability, and maintaining high standards of practice.

How do professionals in a professional learning role typically collaborate with educators and administrators to implement new training initiatives?

Professionals in a Professional Learning role often work closely with teachers, instructional coaches, and school administrators to design and deliver effective training programs. They typically assess the needs of staff, tailor professional development sessions to address those needs, and provide ongoing support through workshops, coaching, or feedback sessions. Collaboration is key, as these professionals facilitate open communication, gather input, and ensure that training aligns with school or district goals. This partnership-driven approach helps build trust and ensures that professional learning initiatives are both relevant and sustainable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional learning specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Learning Specialist, you need expertise in instructional design, adult learning theory, and a background in education or training, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), virtual training platforms, and assessment tools is typically required. Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills help engage adult learners and collaborate with stakeholders. These competencies ensure effective knowledge transfer, engagement, and measurable learning outcomes in professional development settings.

Job Description

What is the Opportunity?

The Global Capital Markets team in the RBC Learning Studio needs someone to design and deliver innovative learning experiences to the early talent population within Capital Markets. This role partners with the Learning Portfolio Lead to design and deliver signature in-person orientation programs for early talent in Capital Markets, along with additional in-person and virtual learning offerings.

You'll own the full learning lifecycle: designing compelling content and experiences, coordinating logistics and vendor partnerships, managing on-site execution, gathering feedback, and providing insights for future innovation. You'll build on a strong foundation of learner satisfaction while evolving our programs to create the next wave of leaders in Capital Markets. You'll partner closely with Capital Markets HR and business leaders to ensure programs align to business objectives while also collaborating with the broader Capital Markets Learning team on other prioritized projects.

What Will You Do?

  • Design and develop learning experiences that meet Capital Markets' orientation objectives, leading discovery and stakeholder sessions to define priorities, outcomes, and success measures.

  • Manage the full lifecycle of program delivery from strategic design to hands-on execution, vendor coordination, and post-program feedback integration.

  • Champion innovation by incorporating industry trends, emerging practices, and RBC-approved AI-enabled tools.

  • Develop and curate learning content and experiences using instructional design tools and platforms, ensuring programs are fresh and engaging through ongoing refinement.

  • Manage all operational elements of program delivery including venue, vendors, communications, bookings, and production support; gather real-time and post-program feedback to identify opportunities.

  • Articulate success measures and design evaluation activities; provide insights from learner feedback and program data for improvement; support adoption of recommendations.

  • Build strong relationships and demonstrate influence with Capital Markets HR and business leaders; drive cross-functional collaboration to align programs with business objectives.

What Do You Need to Succeed?

Must-Have:

  • 4-7 years of professional experience in learning design and development, with demonstrated focus on in-person, facilitation-based learning.

  • Strong interpersonal skills: build trust quickly, communicate clearly, and demonstrate influence across levels.

  • Mindset of continuous innovation: actively seek industry trends, challenge the status quo, and propose bold solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage full-lifecycle program work from strategic design to hands-on execution in a fast-paced environment.

  • Understanding of Capital Markets business and ability to connect learning initiatives to organizational objectives.

  • Willingness and ability to be physically present in downtown Toronto for in-person program execution, along with occasional travel to NYC as required (valid passport required).

  • Excellent technical proficiency with Microsoft Office, WebEx, and Learning Management Systems.

Nice-to-Have:

  • Certification in Adult Learning or Instructional Design.

  • Intermediate knowledge of various authoring tools (e.g., Storyline 360, Rise 360, Review 360, Camtasia, Adobe Creative Suite).

  • Professional Learning Certification (CTDP) or Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.

  • Bilingual capability (English & French).

  • Experience designing or delivering orientation/onboarding programs at scale.

  • Familiarity with talent development in financial services or similar regulated environments.

What is in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best, progressive thinking to keep growing, and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses, flexible benefits, and competitive compensation.

  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities.

  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact.

  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team.

  • Opportunities to take on progressively greater accountabilities.
