Associate Engineer I is a licensed professional engineer who performs a broad range of technical and project management work under general supervision. This position applies established engineering principles to the planning, design, and construction of public works and infrastructure projects, using sound professional judgment to adapt methods or develop solutions for complex or unique conditions. This role includes coordinating or reviewing the work of engineering aides or technicians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs, and changing business practices.

Depending on the area of assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prepares plans, specifications, quantity and cost estimates, reports and other correspondence pertaining to the design, construction and maintenance of a variety of engineering projects.
  • Performs design, calculations and drafting in connection with streets, storm drains, landscaping, irrigation and water systems, sanitary sewers, public buildings, traffic control facilities and other public works projects.
  • Research and interpret applicable codes, regulations, and standards to ensure project compliance. Develop and review construction drawings and specifications, making design adjustments as field conditions require.
  • Support construction inspectors by clarifying plans, resolving onโ€‘site issues, and reviewing asโ€‘built drawings for accuracy.
  • Apply sound professional judgment consistent with accepted civil engineering principles and relevant laws and codes.
  • Provide direction, guidance, and technical support to engineering staff and technicians.
  • Participate in preparing bid documents, cost estimates, and project schedules; review and evaluate contractor submittals, progress payments, and change orders.
  • Monitor project progress and budgets, ensuring work meets established standards and deadlines.
  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, and project documentation; present findings and recommendations as needed.
  • Apply professional judgment and engineering experience to resolve technical challenges and improve project outcomes.
  • Performs other functions as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Experience

4 to 7 years of professional engineering experience and a Bachelorโ€™s degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or a related field.

License/Certificate

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of California

Insurance/Vehicle Registration

Possession of appropriate and current vehicle insurance and registration.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of

  • Advanced principles, practices and methods of civil engineering.
  • Engineering design standards, methods, and materials used in complex projects.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including construction codes, environmental laws, and safety standards.
  • Modern project management methods, including scheduling, budgeting, and consultant coordination.
  • Techniques for preparing and reviewing engineering reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Standard construction practices and inspection methods for public infrastructure improvements.
  • Computer applications and design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
  • Effective written and verbal communication techniques for preparing reports, technical correspondence, and presentations.

Ability to

  • Perform advanced engineering work with minimal supervision, applying professional judgment to resolve technical issues.
  • Design, analyze, and oversee construction of public works and utility projects.
  • Prepare and review comprehensive plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
