What does a professional electrical engineer do?

A Professional Electrical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and supervising the manufacture and installation of electrical equipment, systems, and components. They work on a wide range of projects, including power generation and distribution, communications systems, control systems, and electronic devices. Their duties often include ensuring compliance with safety regulations, preparing technical specifications, and troubleshooting electrical issues. Professional Electrical Engineers may also oversee project management tasks and collaborate with other engineers and stakeholders to deliver effective solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a professional electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Professional Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical theory, circuit design, and project management, often supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of national electrical codes, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals excel and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and innovation of electrical systems in various engineering projects.

What are some common challenges professional electrical engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Professional Electrical Engineers often collaborate with architects, mechanical engineers, and project managers on complex projects. One common challenge is coordinating electrical designs to fit within structural and mechanical constraints while ensuring compliance with safety codes and energy standards. About RTM Engineering Consultants

RTM Engineering Consultants is a national, multi-disciplinary engineering firm providing MEP, Civil, and Structural engineering services. RTM is known for delivering national resources with local relationships, partnering deeply with clients by aligning with the goals, processes, and people behind each organization. (RTM Engineering Consultants)

RTM’s culture is built around collaboration, professional development, and long-term growth. The firm emphasizes mentorship and hands-on learning, and has built structured training and advancement support through internal programs such as RTM University (mentioned across RTM career materials and job postings). (ZipRecruiter)

For engineers who want to work on real projects with real coordination responsibility—without being stuck in a narrow specialty lane—RTM is an excellent platform.

Role Snapshot

This is a mid-to-senior electrical engineering role focused on building systems design across commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. You will develop construction-ready documentation, coordinate across disciplines, support client interaction, and mentor junior staff.

You’ll be hands-on with production—while also stepping into leadership responsibilities across key parts of the project lifecycle (scope, coordination, deliverables, deadlines, and quality control).

Position Overview

RTM is hiring an Electrical Engineer III to support building systems design and project delivery. This role blends:

  • Electrical design + construction documentation

  • Discipline coordination

  • Client-facing communication

  • QA/QC execution

  • Mentorship and technical guidance to developing engineers/designers

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who wants to progress toward lead-level responsibility—without leaving technical design behind.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership Support & Coordination

  • Manage project timelines, deliverables, and communication between internal design teams and clients

  • Coordinate with internal disciplines (mechanical/plumbing, structural, civil, etc.) and external partners to ensure complete design integration

  • Provide project consultation related to schedules, deadlines, site surveys, punch lists, building codes, and engineering standards

Electrical Design & Documentation

  • Produce electrical design deliverables aligned with project scope, specifications, and budgeted hours

  • Develop complete electrical construction documents suitable for permitting, including:

    • power plans

    • lighting plans

    • panel schedules and circuiting

    • one-lines and risers (when applicable)

    • details and equipment coordination

  • Prepare accurate engineering specifications and design documentation within project parameters

  • Research and evaluate engineering solutions consistent with project requirements and constructability expectations

QA/QC and Technical Accuracy

  • Execute QA/QC procedures consistently and accurately

  • Coordinate drawing quality and accuracy across disciplines and trades

  • Maintain drafting/engineering standards and contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement

Client-Facing Communication & Professional Documentation

  • Represent the engineering team in client meetings throughout design and construction

  • Maintain professional project documentation (meeting notes, coordination items, client responses, etc.)

  • Assist with proposal preparation and engineering agreements

Mentorship & Team Support

  • Support onboarding, mentoring, and oversight of junior engineers and designers

  • Provide guidance on:

    • drafting standards

    • coordination workflows

    • engineering documentation expectations

    • professional project execution habits

Billing & Project Administration

  • Ensure timely billing submission for assigned projects

  • Follow established standards, procedures, and work practices

  • Collaborate on continuous improvement initiatives to streamline delivery and reduce waste/cost

Requirements (Must-Haves) — Clear Bulleted Section

To be considered, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred)

  • 5+ years of professional electrical engineering experience (building systems preferred)

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • building codes

    • engineering standards

    • construction processes and workflows

  • Ability to interpret and produce construction drawings

  • Proficiency with:

    • AutoCAD

    • Revit

  • Strong understanding of drafting standards and trade coordination across disciplines

Preferred Qualifications (Highly Valued)

  • EIT certification strongly preferred

  • PE license (or PE track) a major plus

  • Experience in client-facing coordination roles

  • Ability to lead portions of design delivery with limited oversight

Compensation

Estimated starting salary range: $85,000 – $115,000 (DOE)

Final compensation is based on experience, technical capability, design leadership scope, and credentials (EIT/PE). (This range aligns with RTM’s published compensation for Electrical Engineer III postings in multiple RTM markets.) (Indeed)
