Bishop O’Dowd High School

Development Assistant
Non-Exempt/Hourly · On-Site, Oakland CA

Help turn great ideas into meaningful donor experiences.

At Bishop O’Dowd High School, every gift helps shape a more just, joyful, and sustainable world. The Development Assistant plays an important role in making that work possible — providing executive and administrative support, helping produce engaging events, and supporting fundraising and donor engagement projects across the Development team. This is a varied, hands-on role for someone who enjoys keeping things organized, working with people, and helping a busy and successful team turn plans into action.

Key benefits

  • $31-$41 per hour, dependent on experience
  • Generous vacation and paid holidays
  • Employees are eligible to open a 403b plan and an 8% salary contribution is contributed to pension plan by employer, after 6 months of employment
  • Health, vision and dental insurance
  • One remote day per week after completion of onboarding, dependent upon work

Why you’ll love this role

  • Enjoy variety in your work — supporting everything from donor communications and fundraising projects to events and day-to-day office operations
  • Help create meaningful experiences that connect alumni, families, donors, and volunteers with O’Dowd
  • Build skills and experience across multiple areas of fundraising and nonprofit development
  • Take part in department and school-wide retreats
  • Contribute to a highly successful, mission-driven organization
  • Access ongoing training and professional development opportunities
  • Enjoy subsidized lunch program and a reserved parking spot

Development Assistant Key responsibilities

  • Provide executive and administrative support to the Chief Development Officer
  • Provide project support for donor communication and fundraising projects through mailing production, email communication, and coordination of project details and deadlines
  • Under the direction of the event manager, support the planning and production of Development events, including facilities reservations, ordering supplies and materials, volunteer and staff communications, nametags, guest information, and event-day logistics
  • Support alumni communications, including coordinating and tracking alumni features for the monthly e-newsletter and bi-annual print magazine
  • Coordinate Development office operations, including office supplies and furnishings, department storage and materials, team calendars, and meeting logistics
  • Provide administrative and project support to members of the Development team, helping coordinate timelines, materials, communications, and follow-up for shared priorities
  • Serve as an integral member of the team on shared team responsibilities including identification of volunteer resources, effective and timely follow-up and stewardship with donors, and maintenance of constituent information in the school’s donor database.
  • Coordinate volunteer support for department projects
  • Establish and maintain effective, collegial working relationships with O’Dowd faculty and staff, volunteers, donors, alumni, families, and other external stakeholders

What we’re looking for in a Development Assistant

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred
  • 2–4 years of administrative, executive, project, or office support experience; experience in fundraising, education, or a nonprofit organization is a plus
  • A proactive problem-solver who takes initiative, anticipates needs, and is comfortable shifting between different types of work
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, details, and deadlines with dependable follow-through
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated judgment and discretion, including the ability to handle confidential information appropriately
  • Detail-oriented and committed to producing high-quality work
  • Solid proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite, with comfort learning and using new software
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends for Development and school events is required
