General Job Description:
The fundamental purpose of the Converting Utility Operator is to work in tandem with the operator and assistant operators in setting up, operating, adjusting machinery, and stacking unitized products. In addition, the Converting Utility Operator assures the quality of the product produced by the machine meets the needs of our customers. The various converting lines may print, die cut, fold, and unitize corrugated materials into boxes.
During the set-up procedures, it is essential to place printing dies on cylinders according to specifications and to re-hang after cleaning (Overhead lifting occurs when lifting printing dies to the 72" hook.) Essential to transport cutting dies to and from the storage racks (lift cutting dies, with a handle cut out of each end, from shelves at 3" to 6 ft. height) and machine. Essential to assist with the ink system setup (up to 50 lbs.), from ink room, buckets stored 3 high (ranging in height from floor level to 36"). Essential to set up the feed hopper (side gates and tampers), essential to set the pre-feeder, obtain dunnage and cut for the load former. May be essential to set up the stacker end, depending on the operator's circumstances and other criteria that may result in the requirement that the assistant set up these features.
Once the machine is running, it is essential to keep materials in place at the in-feed section, essential to pull tie sheets and bottom sheets from loads at the in-feed. Essential to wash printing dies. May be essential to perform stacker duties such as laying down dunnage sheets, emptying waste carts, pulling trim. Essential to complete daily cleanup activities, essential to blow down machine during extensive clean up period, including cleaning out pits.
Essential to hand feed stock onto in-feed tables and into hoppers. Also to rarely restack spilled loads.
Essential to work overtime as mandated and on any machine that is required, essential to adhere to company and job specific safety procedures including lockout requirements. Essential to attend any meetings, including safety meetings as scheduled
Essential to contact the machine operator, maintenance, supervisor, or department lead regarding problems encountered with the machine. May be essential to use hand tools periodically. Essential to complete maintenance requests for activities requiring the attention of the maintenance department.
Essential to perform cleanup activities using compressed air, using scraper, soap, brush and water hose. Essential to keep work area picked up. On down days, a more extensive cleanup is required, and additionally, some lubrication functions are required. It may be essential on down days to paint, machinery and equipment. Essential to communicate with the other crew members throughout the shift. Essential to, use hand signals as necessary. It is also essential to communicate with the supervisor.
