What is product management?

Product management is a business role focused on guiding the success of a product and leading the cross-functional team responsible for improving it. Product managers are involved in every stage of a product’s lifecycle, from conception and development to launch and ongoing optimization. They work closely with engineering, marketing, sales, and other departments to ensure that the product meets customer needs and business goals. Product managers also define product strategy, prioritize features, and help deliver products that provide value to users.

How does a product manager typically balance stakeholder expectations while keeping the development team focused on priorities?

Product Managers often serve as the bridge between stakeholders—such as customers, executives, and sales teams—and the development team. One common challenge is aligning diverse stakeholder requests with the product vision and roadmap, ensuring that the development team isn't overwhelmed by shifting priorities. Effective Product Managers use clear communication, structured prioritization frameworks (like RICE or MoSCoW), and regular check-ins to manage expectations and keep the team focused on delivering the highest-impact features. This collaborative, transparent approach helps build trust and keeps everyone aligned toward shared goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Manager, you need a strong understanding of market research, product lifecycle management, and strategic planning, often supported by a background in business, engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, product analytics platforms, and certification such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) is common. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help Product Managers align diverse teams and prioritize competing demands. These abilities are essential to successfully drive product vision, ensure effective collaboration, and deliver solutions that meet customer and business needs.

What is the difference between Product Management vs Business Analysis?

AspectProduct ManagementBusiness Analysis
Primary FocusDeveloping product strategy, roadmap, and lifecycle managementAnalyzing business processes, requirements, and solutions
Skills & CertificationsProduct management certifications (e.g., Pragmatic, Scrum), market researchBusiness analysis certifications (e.g., CBAP), process modeling
Work EnvironmentCross-functional teams, product development cyclesBusiness units, project teams, process improvement
Industry UsageTech, retail, manufacturing, any product-driven industryFinance, healthcare, IT, and other sectors requiring process analysis

While both roles involve understanding business needs, Product Management focuses on creating and managing products throughout their lifecycle, whereas Business Analysis concentrates on analyzing and improving business processes and requirements. Both roles are essential in product development but serve different strategic and operational purposes.

Is product management a 9-5 job?

Product management roles typically follow standard business hours, such as 9-5, but can require additional time for meetings, deadlines, and project demands. The schedule may vary depending on the company, industry, and project phase, with some product managers working outside regular hours to coordinate with global teams or meet product launch timelines.

Is product management a high paying job?

Product management is generally considered a high-paying role within the tech industry, with salaries often exceeding those of many other business functions. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and company size, but senior product managers and those with specialized skills can earn substantial salaries and bonuses. Certifications and technical knowledge can also influence earning potential.

Job SummaryKey Deliverables and Responsibilities

The Director Product Management, Salesforce is accountable for the strategic direction, business and customer outcomes, and product maturity enabled through the Salesforce ecosystem. This includes workflow orchestration, case management, AI-powered experiences, and enterprise service modernization. This role defines and achieves measurable OKRs, adoption, and value realization; creates strategy and roadmap; governs priorities and trade-offs; aligns stakeholders and delivery teams; and provides leadership for Salesforce Product Owners.

The Director will bring extensive hands-on experience across the Salesforce product suite and platform ecosystem, including Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Data Cloud, Agentforce/Einstein, and Tableau/CRM Analytics. This role owns the vision, strategy, roadmap, backlog priorities, adoption approach, and measurable outcomes for enterprise Salesforce capabilities that improve how work moves through the organization, how cases are captured and resolved, and how artificial intelligence is applied to reduce friction, improve productivity, and create better experiences.

What You'll Do

  • Own product outcomes and OKRs by defining measurable outcomes, establishing baselines, maintaining a product scorecard, and proactively managing trade-offs to deliver outcomes rather than only outputs.

  • Set product vision and strategy by developing a clear strategy narrative and roadmap, communicating intent, sequencing, trade-offs, and rationale to executives, stakeholders, and delivery teams.

  • Lead multi-team discovery across domains and shared services consumers, using research, analytics, instrumentation, and stakeholder input to validate problems, segment users, and define value hypotheses.

  • Prioritize enterprise demand by managing intake across competing needs using transparent criteria such as value, risk, effort, dependencies, and compliance.

  • Translate strategy into outcomes, epics, and acceptance criteria while establishing standards and decision guardrails that enable teams to execute consistently.

  • Partner with engineering, platform architecture, security, risk, compliance, governance, and operations teams to deliver capabilities, standards, and enablement that scale.

  • Define instrumentation and reporting for adoption, reliability, performance, quality, policy compliance, and time-to-value, using insights to drive continuous improvement.

  • Mentor Associate Product Owners and Product Owners by teaching discovery, outcome definition, prioritization, and stakeholder management to raise product maturity.

  • Establish product rituals and artifacts such as roadmap reviews, quarterly planning inputs, decision logs, and release communications to improve operating model rigor.

  • Define ownership and operating agreements across teams and customer segments, aligning governance forums and escalation paths to support fast, compliant decisions.

What We Are Looking For
  • Significant product management experience owning strategy, roadmap, prioritization, delivery partnership, adoption, and measurable outcomes for complex products, platforms, service experiences, CRM capabilities, or operational systems.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience leading Product Owners across multiple Salesforce platforms.

  • Demonstrated ability to define OKRs, instrument products, and manage to outcomes such as adoption, value realization, reliability, quality, risk, and compliance.

  • Strong Salesforce product strategy fluency across platforms and complex domains, including governance, operating models, service design, dependency management, and lifecycle planning from discovery through adoption.

  • Significant hands-on product experience with the Salesforce ecosystem, including partnership with Salesforce architects, administrators, developers, and integration teams.

  • Excellent stakeholder leadership and ability to influence without authority across engineering, security, risk, compliance, enterprise architecture, and business domains.

  • Experience identifying, shaping, or delivering AI-enabled products, automation capabilities, and intelligent workflow experiences.

  • Working understanding of practical AI use cases such as generative AI, case summarization, knowledge recommendations, intelligent routing, conversational experiences, automated assistance, decision support, and agentic workflows.

  • Exceptional strategic communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to frame problems, articulate trade-offs, and drive alignment with executives and delivery teams.

  • Expert knowledge of Azure DevOps to manage, prioritize, and execute backlog of work, including managing or creating dashboards, running reports, and building queries.

  • Current FINRA Series 99 and/or Series 7 license, or ability and expectation to successfully obtain required FINRA licensing within 12 months of employment.

What Success Looks Like

  • Enterprise Salesforce strategy has clear, actionable, measurable OKRs and a scorecard that leadership uses to manage performance and investment.

  • Adoption grows across target segments, with more users and teams adopting the product through reduced friction, improved self-service, and stronger onboarding.

  • AI creates measurable business value by improving efficiencies, guidance, knowledge access, summarization, and decision support while maintaining appropriate governance and controls.

  • The product experience improves through faster time-to-value, fewer recurring incidents or defects, clearer operational ownership, and reduced rework for delivery teams.

  • Stakeholders trust product decisions because prioritization is transparent, evidence-based, and aligned to risk, compliance, and business value.
