What is a product innovation engineer?

Product Innovation Engineers are professionals who focus on developing new products or improving existing ones through innovative design, materials, and processes. They work at the intersection of engineering, design, and business, collaborating with cross-functional teams to bring creative ideas to market. Their responsibilities typically include researching market needs, prototyping, testing, and refining products to ensure they meet customer expectations and company goals. Product Innovation Engineers play a crucial role in driving a company's competitiveness and growth by continuously seeking novel solutions and opportunities.

How does a product innovation engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development process?

As a Product Innovation Engineer, you will work closely with cross-functional teams such as marketing, design, manufacturing, and quality assurance to bring new products from concept to reality. Collaboration often involves participating in brainstorming sessions, sharing technical insights, and integrating feedback from different departments to ensure the product meets customer needs and technical feasibility. Regular meetings and collaborative tools are used to align goals, track progress, and quickly address any challenges that arise. This teamwork is essential for balancing innovation with practical considerations like manufacturability, cost, and compliance.

Are product innovation engineers in demand?

Product innovation engineers are in demand as companies seek to develop new products and improve existing ones, especially in industries like technology, manufacturing, and consumer goods. They often require skills in design, prototyping, and project management, with employment growth driven by the need for competitive innovation.

What is the difference between Product Innovation Engineer vs Product Development Engineer?

· Lead technical design reviews and engineering discussions throughout the product lifecycle

· Support tooling development, product costing, and manufacturability optimization

· Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs)

Research, Analysis & Validation:

· Develop engineering test specifications and validation plans

· Conduct or support DFMEA activities, strength analysis, and fatigue testing

· Evaluate and validate product designs through prototype and component testing

· Research new technologies, materials, and manufacturing methods

· Support innovation initiatives, including patent searches and invention disclosures

Manufacturing & Production Support:

· Partner with factory engineering teams to ensure designs meet manufacturing, quality, and cost requirements

· Support new product introduction into mass production

· Troubleshoot technical and manufacturing challenges during production ramp-up

· Review quality and inspection data to drive continuous product improvement and value-engineering opportunities

· Collaborate with Asia-based engineering and manufacturing teams on product execution and technical requirements

Mentorship & Collaboration:

· Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers and designers

· Share best practices related to mechanical design, manufacturability, and problem-solving

· Contribute to continuous improvement within engineering processes and product development standards

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

· 7+ years of mechanical design or product development experience

· Proficiency with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred)

· Strong understanding of mechanical systems, materials, and manufacturing processes

· Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

· Strong communication and collaboration abilities

Preferred Experience:

· Consumer product development experience

· Experience with plastic injection molding and high-volume manufacturing

· Familiarity with DFMEA, testing, and product validation

· Experience collaborating with Industrial Design teams

· Passion for hands-on design, building, or mechanical projects

Why Join Us?

· Opportunity to mentor and guide developing engineers

· High-impact role with strong technical ownership

· Dynamic, collaborative, and innovation-focused engineering environment

· Travel opportunities available both domestically and internationally
