We have an immediate need for a Senior Software Engineer, Product & Innovation to join our IT Solution Engineering team. This role reports to the Director, IT Solution Engineering and will play a key role in building innovative software solutions that support both internal business operations and clientโfacing initiatives.
About the Team
Weโre a small, fullโstack team that builds custom software for the firmโinternal tools, clientโfacing platforms, and everything in between. There is no separate โfrontโendโ or โbackโendโ ownership model; every engineer takes responsibility for their work from the earliest stakeholder conversations through deployment and production support.
We thrive on collaboration, autonomy, and innovation, leveraging modern development practices and AIโassisted engineering tools to rapidly move from concept to productionโready solutions.
The Role
Weโre looking for a senior engineer who can take a product idea from two very different starting points and run with it.
Sometimes a solution concept will arrive already wellโdefined through collaboration with our Legal Innovation and Business Analysis professionals, many of whom are former practicing attorneys who have already translated a business need into a technical concept. Other times, youโll be working directly with attorneys and business stakeholders, helping shape the idea from the ground up.
AIโassisted development is central to how we work. Youโll use modern AI development tools to accelerate the path from concept to prototype, gather stakeholder feedback, and iteratively develop impactful solutions.
This is a highly autonomous role requiring strong technical judgment, product thinking, and the ability to determine how much discovery, requirements gathering, and solution design is needed before development begins.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with Legal Innovation and Business Analysis teams to transform product concepts into working software solutions.
- Interface directly with attorneys and business stakeholders to understand challenges, gather requirements, and identify opportunities for technologyโdriven solutions.
- Utilize AIโassisted development tools to rapidly prototype, validate, and iterate on applications.
- Own projects endโtoโend including architecture, frontโend development, backโend development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.
- Design, build, and maintain applications within Brownsteinโs Microsoft and Azure technology ecosystem.
- Work across the full technology stack, contributing wherever project needs dictate.
- Evaluate business requirements and determine when additional stakeholder engagement is necessary to ensure successful outcomes.
- Develop scalable, maintainable, and secure software solutions aligned with firm standards and best practices.
- Participate in architectural discussions, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Contribute to technical documentation and knowledgeโsharing efforts.
- Stay current on emerging technologies, AIโassisted development tools, and industry best practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelorโs degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience in legal, professional services, consulting, or other highly regulated environments with strong confidentiality and compliance requirements, preferred.
- Significant experience developing and delivering production software across the full application stack.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing modern web applications and software solutions.
- Daily proficiency using AIโassisted development platforms such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools.
- Experience working directly with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate business needs into technical solutions.
- Experience taking both wellโdefined concepts and loosely defined business challenges from ideation through implementation.
- Experience within the Microsoft technology ecosystem, including Azure cloud services.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, application security, scalability, maintainability, and performance optimization.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problemโsolving skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fastโpaced environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Experience working alongside Legal Innovation, Knowledge Management, Product Management, or Business Analysis teams, preferred.
- Experience building clientโfacing applications and digital products, preferred.
- Familiarity with modern cloudโnative development practices and DevOps methodologies, preferred.
- Experience developing solutions leveraging AI and large language model technologies, preferred.
