Job description

After opening its doors in Denver in 1968, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck LLP has grown to 14 offices, 700+ employees with over 300 attorneys and policy professionals nationwide. With more than 55 years in the industry, building strong relationships is our priority, not only with our clients but within our teams and our communities. Do you seek camaraderie, collaboration, and a challenge? If you are searching for a firm committed to creating strong relationships and a collaborative culture, we want you at Brownstein.

At Brownstein, clients get access to the top legal minds in the industry, powerful policy knowledge, and best-inโ€‘class business acumen to solve businessesโ€™ toughest challenges. Brownstein is a law and lobbying firm that has been making moves for more than 50 years to stay at the vanguard of its industry. You will find this firm at the heart of many of the most important cases, the most significant deals, and the countryโ€™s most pivotal legislation. Brownsteinโ€”weโ€™re all in. For more information, visit us at bhfs.com.

We have an immediate need for a Senior Software Engineer, Product & Innovation to join our IT Solution Engineering team. This role reports to the Director, IT Solution Engineering and will play a key role in building innovative software solutions that support both internal business operations and clientโ€‘facing initiatives.

About the Team

Weโ€™re a small, fullโ€‘stack team that builds custom software for the firmโ€”internal tools, clientโ€‘facing platforms, and everything in between. There is no separate โ€œfrontโ€‘endโ€ or โ€œbackโ€‘endโ€ ownership model; every engineer takes responsibility for their work from the earliest stakeholder conversations through deployment and production support.

We thrive on collaboration, autonomy, and innovation, leveraging modern development practices and AIโ€‘assisted engineering tools to rapidly move from concept to productionโ€‘ready solutions.

The Role

Weโ€™re looking for a senior engineer who can take a product idea from two very different starting points and run with it.

Sometimes a solution concept will arrive already wellโ€‘defined through collaboration with our Legal Innovation and Business Analysis professionals, many of whom are former practicing attorneys who have already translated a business need into a technical concept. Other times, youโ€™ll be working directly with attorneys and business stakeholders, helping shape the idea from the ground up.

AIโ€‘assisted development is central to how we work. Youโ€™ll use modern AI development tools to accelerate the path from concept to prototype, gather stakeholder feedback, and iteratively develop impactful solutions.

This is a highly autonomous role requiring strong technical judgment, product thinking, and the ability to determine how much discovery, requirements gathering, and solution design is needed before development begins.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate closely with Legal Innovation and Business Analysis teams to transform product concepts into working software solutions.
  • Interface directly with attorneys and business stakeholders to understand challenges, gather requirements, and identify opportunities for technologyโ€‘driven solutions.
  • Utilize AIโ€‘assisted development tools to rapidly prototype, validate, and iterate on applications.
  • Own projects endโ€‘toโ€‘end including architecture, frontโ€‘end development, backโ€‘end development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Design, build, and maintain applications within Brownsteinโ€™s Microsoft and Azure technology ecosystem.
  • Work across the full technology stack, contributing wherever project needs dictate.
  • Evaluate business requirements and determine when additional stakeholder engagement is necessary to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Develop scalable, maintainable, and secure software solutions aligned with firm standards and best practices.
  • Participate in architectural discussions, code reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and knowledgeโ€‘sharing efforts.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies, AIโ€‘assisted development tools, and industry best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience in legal, professional services, consulting, or other highly regulated environments with strong confidentiality and compliance requirements, preferred.
  • Significant experience developing and delivering production software across the full application stack.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing modern web applications and software solutions.
  • Daily proficiency using AIโ€‘assisted development platforms such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools.
  • Experience working directly with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Experience taking both wellโ€‘defined concepts and loosely defined business challenges from ideation through implementation.
  • Experience within the Microsoft technology ecosystem, including Azure cloud services.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, application security, scalability, maintainability, and performance optimization.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problemโ€‘solving skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fastโ€‘paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Experience working alongside Legal Innovation, Knowledge Management, Product Management, or Business Analysis teams, preferred.
  • Experience building clientโ€‘facing applications and digital products, preferred.
  • Familiarity with modern cloudโ€‘native development practices and DevOps methodologies, preferred.
  • Experience developing solutions leveraging AI and large language model technologies, preferred.
Compensation and Benefits

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with employer match, profit sharing, and vacation/sick/personal time off. A hybrid work schedule is offered. We are offering a salary range for this position, commensurate with experience ranging from $150,000 โ€“ $180,000.
