Product Development Consulting information

What is product development consulting?

Product development consulting involves providing expert advice and support to organizations as they create and launch new products or improve existing ones. Consultants in this field help businesses identify market opportunities, refine product ideas, manage development processes, and bring products to market efficiently. They often offer guidance on strategy, design, prototyping, testing, and go-to-market plans, leveraging industry knowledge to reduce risks and increase the chances of product success.

How does a product development consultant typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Product Development Consultants often serve as a bridge between different departments—such as engineering, marketing, design, and sales—by facilitating clear communication and aligning project goals. They participate in regular meetings, gather input from stakeholders, and ensure that all perspectives are considered in decision-making. This collaborative approach helps identify potential challenges early, streamline development processes, and increase the likelihood of a successful product launch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product development consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Consultant, you need expertise in market analysis, product lifecycle management, and a background in business, engineering, or design, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with tools like project management software (e.g., Jira, Trello), prototyping platforms, and data analytics systems is typically required. Strong communication, creative problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set top consultants apart. These abilities are crucial for guiding successful product launches and ensuring solutions align with client objectives and market demands.

What is the difference between Product Development Consulting vs Product Management?

Product Development Consulting involves advising companies on creating and improving products, often across multiple clients or projects. Product Management focuses on overseeing a company's product lifecycle internally. While both roles require industry knowledge and strategic thinking, consulting emphasizes external client solutions, whereas product management centers on internal product success.

What does a product development consultant do?

A product development consultant helps companies design, develop, and improve products by providing expertise in market research, product strategy, and design processes. They often analyze customer needs, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and utilize tools like CAD or project management software to ensure successful product launches. Their role involves problem-solving, innovation, and aligning products with business goals.

Job description

Req ID:502462

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Could you be the full-time hybrid Product Owner Wayside application in Saint-Bruno, QC, CA we're looking for?

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your technical and problem-solving expertise in a cutting-edge field. You'll work alongside versatile, creative, and collaborative teammates.

The Train Control and Monitoring System (TCMS) team is involved in the improvement and troubleshooting of our customers active train fleets. The typical projects span from issue troubleshooting and correction, obsolescence management to functional improvements.

The TCMS has an onboard and a wayside application: The onboard portion acquires train data, apply control rules and activates outputs for train operation. It also gathers multiple train health metrics that are sent to the wayside software over wireless links. The wayside application receives, processes, archives and makes this data available for consultation. This data is used for efficient train operation, preventive and reactive maintenance.

You'll play a key role in the specification, integration, and validation of innovative transportation systems, directly contributing to optimizing overall project performance. Day-to-day, you'll work closely with teams across the business (clients, partners, subcontractors, and other Alstom entities), participate in technical coordination, and ensure compliance with Alstom's standards and processes, and much more.

You'll specifically take care of gathering, organizing, and tracking requirements in collaboration with project managers, architects, developers, validation teams, customers, and also coordinate systems engineering activities, including managing client changes and directives.
We'll look to you for:
Managing requirements in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
Coordinating systems engineering activities and managing client changes
Monitoring and managing technical documentation to ensure compliance
Building and maintaining constructive relationships with clients, partners, and subcontractors
Implementing systems engineering methods and tools
Participating in technical risk assessments and performance analysis
Collaborating with validation teams to ensure all requirements are met
Responsible for final product validation and approval

All about you
We value passion and attitude over experience. That's why we don't expect you to have every single skill. Instead, we've listed some that we think will help you succeed and grow in this role:
Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
Experience in a similar industry (3-7 years in railway, aerospace, automotive, or related fields)
Ability to work autonomously on multiple systems/projects
   Strong coordination and collaboration skills
   Customer and product orientation
Ability to challenge product definitions and verify deliverables
Familiarity with software development environment (Database, programming languages, configuration management, web client/server, API...)
Documentation, requirements management (IBM DOORS or other requirement management software)
On-site product validation and related reports
Experience in an agile software development environment (asset)
Experience with a lifecycle management tool (EWM, Jira, etc.)
Familiarity with railway systems architecture (asset)
Professional proficiency in French and English (written and spoken)
Willingness to travel occasionally to customer sites across North America
Enthusiasm, team spirit, and openness to dialogue
Ability to manage and arbitrate different point of views

Things you'll enjoy Join us on a life-long transformative journey - the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You'll also:
Enjoy stability, challenges and a long-term career free from boring daily routines
Work with new security standards for rail signalling
Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues
   Contribute to innovative projects
Utilise our dynamic and flexible working environment
Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries
Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning
Progress towards senior engineering or leadership roles
Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive social coverage (life, medical, pension)

Bilingual French and English knowledge of a language other than French is an asset when dealing with our international partners, suppliers, colleagues and customers. In Quebec, French remains the main working language of our company.

You don't need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you'll be proud. If you're up for the challenge, we'd love to hear from you!

As a global business, we're an equal-opportunity employer that celebrates diversity across the 63  countries we operate in. We're committed to creating an inclusive workplace for everyone.
