Product Development Consulting information

What is product development consulting?

Product development consulting involves providing expert advice and support to organizations as they create and launch new products or improve existing ones. Consultants in this field help businesses identify market opportunities, refine product ideas, manage development processes, and bring products to market efficiently. They often offer guidance on strategy, design, prototyping, testing, and go-to-market plans, leveraging industry knowledge to reduce risks and increase the chances of product success.

How does a product development consultant typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Product Development Consultants often serve as a bridge between different departments—such as engineering, marketing, design, and sales—by facilitating clear communication and aligning project goals. They participate in regular meetings, gather input from stakeholders, and ensure that all perspectives are considered in decision-making. This collaborative approach helps identify potential challenges early, streamline development processes, and increase the likelihood of a successful product launch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product development consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Consultant, you need expertise in market analysis, product lifecycle management, and a background in business, engineering, or design, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with tools like project management software (e.g., Jira, Trello), prototyping platforms, and data analytics systems is typically required. Strong communication, creative problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set top consultants apart. These abilities are crucial for guiding successful product launches and ensuring solutions align with client objectives and market demands.

What does a product development consultant do?

A product development consultant helps companies design, develop, and improve products by providing expertise in market research, product strategy, and design processes. They often analyze customer needs, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and utilize tools like CAD or project management software to ensure successful product launches. Their role involves problem-solving, innovation, and aligning products with business goals.

About IPM

For more than three decades, IPM has partnered with pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical technology organizations to successfully lead the execution of strategic portfolios and mission-critical initiatives. IPM works with clients to improve project, program, and portfolio execution across product development, regulatory affairs, quality, commercialization, launch readiness, lifecycle management, and operational transformation.

Position Summary

IPM is seeking experienced professionals to lead complex pharmaceutical projects across the product lifecycle—from development and regulatory execution through commercialization, launch readiness, and post-launch management. The ideal candidate combines strong project and program leadership with hands-on product lifecycle leadership experience and can successfully operate across a wide range of client environments.

This role is designed for professionals who can lead development-focused initiatives while also bringing commercialization and launch-readiness experience. Successful consultants will build structure, drive accountability, manage risks, facilitate decision-making, and deliver executive-ready outputs that move critical programs forward.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Product Development & Lifecycle Programs

  • Lead cross-functional pharmaceutical development programs across pre-clinical, clinical, regulatory, CMC, quality, supply chain, commercialization, and post-approval stages
  • Develop and maintain integrated project plans aligned to business objectives, critical milestones, and regulatory requirements

Support Regulatory, Quality & Operational Readiness Initiatives

  • Lead planning and execution for regulatory submission readiness, inspection readiness, quality system improvements, technology transfer, manufacturing scale-up, labeling, and supply initiatives.

Drive Commercialization & Launch Readiness

  • Develop integrated launch readiness plans spanning Commercial, Medical Affairs, Market Access, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Patient Services, and Analytics functions.
  • Facilitate launch readiness assessments, governance reviews, milestone tracking, and post-launch stabilization planning.
  • Support initiatives involving market access, pricing and contracting, reimbursement, HEOR/RWE, patient access, specialty pharmacy, field readiness, and commercial operations.

Required Qualifications

  • 8–15+ years of experience within the pharmaceutical industry leading:  product development lifecycle projects, regulatory, quality and operational readiness initiatives, and commercialization and launch readiness projects
  • Minimum 3 years of project or program management experience or equivalent cross-functional leadership responsibility
  • Demonstrated success leading complex initiatives involving senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent executive communication, facilitation, documentation, and stakeholder-management skills
