What is product design?

Product design is the process of identifying market opportunities, defining problems, and developing innovative solutions in the form of physical or digital products. It involves understanding user needs, creating prototypes, and working closely with engineering, marketing, and manufacturing teams to bring ideas to life. Product designers combine creativity, technical skills, and user-centered thinking to ensure that products are both functional and visually appealing.

How do product designers typically collaborate with engineers and product managers during the development process?

Product designers work closely with engineers and product managers throughout the product development cycle. Early on, designers participate in brainstorming sessions and user research to define product requirements alongside product managers. As concepts are developed, designers create wireframes and prototypes, sharing them with engineers to ensure technical feasibility and alignment with business goals. Regular feedback loops, design reviews, and cross-functional meetings are common, allowing designers to refine their work based on input from both technical and strategic perspectives. This collaborative approach helps ensure the end product is user-centered, technically sound, and aligned with company objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Designer, you need proficiency in user-centered design, prototyping, and visual communication, often backed by a degree in design or related experience. Familiarity with design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite and experience with user research and testing platforms are typical requirements. Strong collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving skills help product designers translate user needs into effective solutions within cross-functional teams. These skills ensure that products are both aesthetically pleasing and functional, meeting user expectations and business goals.

What are the qualifications to get a job in product design?

The qualifications to get a job in product design depend on your specific responsibilities and position. Prototype designers and drafters typically need a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a closely related subject, although some drafters can begin with an associate degree or specialist knowledge of AutoCAD. Production designers may need experience or a bachelor’s degree in materials science, such as chemistry or chemical engineering, which helps them choose the appropriate materials for a product. Important skills include strong technical ability and interpersonal communication.

What is the difference between Product Design vs UX Design?

AspectProduct DesignUX Design

Product Design encompasses a broad scope, including user experience, visual aesthetics, and overall product strategy. UX Design is more specialized, focusing on creating intuitive and effective user experiences. While both roles overlap, Product Designers often handle a wider range of responsibilities, integrating business goals with user needs, whereas UX Designers concentrate on optimizing usability and interaction.

Is product design still in demand?

Product design remains a in-demand field as companies prioritize user experience and innovative products. Skilled designers with knowledge of tools like Adobe Creative Suite and prototyping software are sought after across technology, consumer goods, and digital services sectors.

What do you do as a product designer?

A product designer is responsible for creating and developing the visual and functional aspects of a product, often involving user research, prototyping, and collaboration with engineers and stakeholders. They use tools like Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD and focus on user experience and interface design to ensure the product is intuitive and effective. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential in this role.

What jobs can I do with product design?

With a background in product design, you can pursue roles such as UX/UI designer, interaction designer, product manager, or visual designer. These roles typically require skills in design tools like Sketch or Figma, user research, and understanding of user-centered design principles.

Job description

About Recurly:

Recurly, Inc., a SaaS company, provides a versatile subscription management platform to manage the entire subscription lifecycle for market-leading brands worldwide. Subscription businesses such as Sling TV, FabFitFun, Cinemark and Fubo.tv depend on Recurly to harness the power of the subscription model and drive recurring revenue growth. Since its launch in 2009, Recurly has deployed subscription billing for thousands of companies across 55 countries. Our platform empowers billions of credit card transactions and has enabled customers to recover nearly $1.3 billion in revenue in 2024.

Recurly is backed by Accel-KKR, a leading technology-focused private equity firm with over $10 billion in capital commitments. The partnership offers Recurly access to significant capital and resources to make continued investments in technology and platform innovation and expand our go-to-market initiatives.

As a Product Designer, you’ll work closely with your product team to understand the business challenges our customers face, imagine valuable and viable solutions, and deliver artifacts for development. You’ll employ traditional design techniques and modern AI-augmented workflows to quickly translate user experience ideas into design mockups, prototypes, and functional code.

Success here will mean balancing craft with practical decision-making while working with internal and external stakeholders. You’ll need a strong sense for when details deserve extra care and when it’s time to ship and refine through iteration.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct generative and evaluative research to discern user needs and behaviors.
  • Translate findings and insights into usable, effective, and accessible user experiences.
  • Identify product opportunities, write user stories, natural language prompts, and acceptance criteria, and provide thoughtful, creative solutions that apply knowledge of your product area and the business context.
  • Contribute to your team's strategy, roadmap, and success metrics.
  • Design user experiences for new features and refinements, balancing customer value, quality, and what's feasible to build.
  • Incorporate Al-augmented design and development workflows to ensure the product experience stays true to the original intent.
  • Create product experiences that harness ML and generative AI to give merchants the power to achieve real business results.
  • Communicate ideas verbally and visually through concept designs, flow diagrams, wireframes, mockups, and high-fidelity prototypes.
  • Facilitate collaborative design activities with cross-functional partners and involve them in explorations.
  • Attend scrum team rituals, including backlog refinement, daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
  • Apply Recurly’s design system to solutions and contribute to its improvement.
  • Eagerly seek out opportunities to learn, grow, and improve.
  • Advocate for the value of user-centered design.
Qualifications
  • 2–5 years of hands-on professional experience designing for digital products.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Design or equivalent practical experience.
  • A strong product design portfolio that reveals your skills and craftsmanship. Highlight key choices you made and the reasons behind them, demonstrating your design expertise.
  • Proficiency using UI/UX design, prototyping, and collaboration tools. We primarily work in Figma and Claude, but we’re always interested in exploring new capabilities.
  • Familiarity with the front-end development technologies behind the web. You should be able to predict whether a solution can leverage existing user interface elements and components, or if it demands more extensive custom development.
  • Strong communication and analytical abilities, evident both in writing and verbally, alongside excellent interpersonal skills.
You’ll fit right in if you…
  • Have a positive attitude and understand that every design problem is worth your care.
  • Enjoy exploring new technologies and ways of working.
  • Embrace constructive criticism as part of the process and can clearly articulate your design decisions.
  • Believe in craft and strong visual design fundamentals, including typography, color, and composition.
  • Aren’t afraid to fail and love to iterate quickly.
  • Pride yourself on empowering and supporting the success of your peers.
  • Care passionately about creating inclusive experiences for all people.
