What is the difference between Product Design Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectProduct Design EngineeringMechanical Engineering
FocusDesigning and developing new products, emphasizing user experience and aestheticsAnalyzing and creating mechanical systems, focusing on functionality and structural integrity
SkillsCAD, prototyping, user-centered design, materials selectionStatics, dynamics, thermodynamics, manufacturing processes
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, R&D labs, cross-disciplinary teamsManufacturing plants, engineering firms, research labs
CertificationsOften requires industrial design or product development certificationsProfessional engineering licenses (PE), mechanical engineering certifications

Product Design Engineering and Mechanical Engineering share overlapping skills in CAD and prototyping but differ mainly in their focus. Product Design Engineers prioritize user experience and aesthetics, while Mechanical Engineers concentrate on mechanical systems and structural analysis. Both roles are vital in product development but serve different aspects of the engineering process.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior product design engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in CAD software, and a strong portfolio can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially in high-demand industries like technology and aerospace. Achieving this level often requires advanced degrees, leadership roles, and working in competitive markets or companies with high compensation packages.

What is Product Design Engineering?

Product Design Engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines principles of engineering, design, and manufacturing to create new products or improve existing ones. Professionals in this field are responsible for conceptualizing, designing, prototyping, and testing products to ensure they are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and manufacturable. They often work closely with teams from marketing, manufacturing, and user experience to bring innovative ideas to market. Product Design Engineers use tools such as CAD software and rapid prototyping to bring their concepts to life. Their work spans industries like consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and more.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior product design engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in CAD software, and a strong portfolio can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in high-demand industries or companies with performance-based bonuses. Achieving this level often requires leadership roles, specialized expertise, and sometimes stock options or profit sharing.

What is a product design engineer?

A product design engineer develops and improves products by combining engineering principles with design skills. They use tools like CAD software, conduct prototypes, and collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure functionality, usability, and manufacturability of products throughout the development process.

What can you do with a product design engineering degree?

A product design engineering degree prepares individuals to develop, prototype, and improve consumer and industrial products. Graduates can work in roles such as product designer, mechanical engineer, or CAD specialist, often using tools like SolidWorks or AutoCAD. The degree also provides a foundation for careers in research, development, and manufacturing environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Design Engineer, a strong background in engineering principles, 3D modeling, and materials science is essential, typically supported by a degree in mechanical or product design engineering. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and familiarity with prototyping tools and manufacturing processes, are commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help engineers collaborate effectively and translate ideas into practical designs. These skills ensure innovative, manufacturable products that meet user needs and business goals.

How do Product Design Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development process?

Product Design Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams, including industrial designers, mechanical engineers, marketing specialists, and manufacturing personnel. They are often responsible for translating user requirements and design concepts into functional, manufacturable products by facilitating communication between departments. Regular meetings, design reviews, and prototype testing sessions are typical, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned and potential issues are addressed early. This collaborative environment enables Product Design Engineers to balance aesthetic, functional, and cost considerations effectively.

Job description

About Hark

Hark is an artificial intelligence company building advanced, personalized intelligence. One that is proactive, multimodal, and capable of interacting with the world through speech, text, vision, and persistent memory.

We're pairing that intelligence with next-generation hardware to create a universal interface between humans and machines. While today's AI largely operates through chat boxes and decade-old devices, Hark is focused on what comes next: agentic systems that interact naturally with people and the real world.

To get there, we're developing multimodal models and next-generation AI hardware together - designed from the ground up as a single, unified interface for a new era of intelligent systems.

About the Role

We're hiring a Product Design Engineer to help shape the physical form of our AI-powered devices. You'll work across the full product development cycle - concept sketches, CAD modeling, prototyping, and DFM - collaborating with electrical and ML engineers to design enclosures and mechanisms that accommodate complex sensor arrays, thermal systems, and compact compute modules.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design of core hardware (enclosures, structural components, flex assemblies, interconnects) from concept to production
  • Convert industrial design intent into reliable, manufacturable, and precise engineering solutions, maintaining product vision and structural/functional performance
  • Define and own specifications, tolerances, material selections, and 3D CAD across processes like injection molding, die casting, stamping, and CNC machining
  • Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) with manufacturing partners from early concept through production builds
  • Use tolerance analysis, FEA, and DOE's to validate designs and resolve failure modes pre-assembly
  • Collaborate with Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Acoustic Engineering, Reliability & Operations to unify design considerations (functionality, thermal management, human factors, reliability, cost, and aesthetics)
  • Build functional prototypes in-house and travel to manufacturing facilities to support builds and resolve issues

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in mechanical or product design engineering (or similar)
  • 7+ years shipping consumer hardware from concept to mass production
  • Deep fluency in mechanical CAD (NX preferred), strong GD&T, tolerance analysis, dimensional management, and statistical software (JMP)
  • Comfortable with hands-on prototyping and external partners
  • Hands-on experience designing for high-volume manufacturing (injection molding, die casting, stamping, CNC machining)
  •  Proven ability to balance mechanical, electrical, and industrial design trade-offs at the system level
  • Direct experience collaborating with external suppliers and contract manufacturers, including onsite factory support
  • Comfortable in early-stage product development with ambiguous constraints and open solution space

Bonus Qualifications

  • Masters in mechanical engineering, product design engineering, mechatronics engineering or similar
  • Experience in new product architecture & shipping first generation devices in a lead role
  • Experience with in-field failure analysis
  • Experience integrating complex sensors including microphones & cameras
  • Experience integrating displays, audio modules etc.

Compensation

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $120,000 - $300,000 annually.

The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role. This information will be shared if an employment offer is extended.
