What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Product Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Design Engineer, a strong background in engineering principles, 3D modeling, and materials science is essential, typically supported by a degree in mechanical or product design engineering. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and familiarity with prototyping tools and manufacturing processes, are commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help engineers collaborate effectively and translate ideas into practical designs. These skills ensure innovative, manufacturable products that meet user needs and business goals.

How do Product Design Engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development process?

Product Design Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams, including industrial designers, mechanical engineers, marketing specialists, and manufacturing personnel. They are often responsible for translating user requirements and design concepts into functional, manufacturable products by facilitating communication between departments. Regular meetings, design reviews, and prototype testing sessions are typical, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned and potential issues are addressed early. This collaborative environment enables Product Design Engineers to balance aesthetic, functional, and cost considerations effectively.

What is Product Design Engineering?

Product Design Engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines principles of engineering, design, and manufacturing to create new products or improve existing ones. Professionals in this field are responsible for conceptualizing, designing, prototyping, and testing products to ensure they are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and manufacturable. They often work closely with teams from marketing, manufacturing, and user experience to bring innovative ideas to market. Product Design Engineers use tools such as CAD software and rapid prototyping to bring their concepts to life. Their work spans industries like consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and more.

What is the difference between Product Design Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectProduct Design EngineeringMechanical Engineering
FocusDesigning and developing new products, emphasizing user experience and aestheticsAnalyzing and creating mechanical systems, focusing on functionality and structural integrity
SkillsCAD, prototyping, user-centered design, materials selectionStatics, dynamics, thermodynamics, manufacturing processes
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, R&D labs, cross-disciplinary teamsManufacturing plants, engineering firms, research labs
CertificationsOften requires industrial design or product development certificationsProfessional engineering licenses (PE), mechanical engineering certifications

Product Design Engineering and Mechanical Engineering share overlapping skills in CAD and prototyping but differ mainly in their focus. Product Design Engineers prioritize user experience and aesthetics, while Mechanical Engineers concentrate on mechanical systems and structural analysis. Both roles are vital in product development but serve different aspects of the engineering process.

Job Description
Teledyne Micropac is looking for a Design Engineering Manager leads the development of electronic products and systems for aerospace, defense, and space applications. This role is responsible for technical execution across new product introduction (NPI) and funded development programs.
The Design Engineering Manager provides hands-on technical leadership and manages a small, multidisciplinary team of engineers spanning electrical design, embedded software, and product development. This role works closely with Program Management, Operations, Quality, Mission Assurance, and other engineering functions to ensure designs meet performance, schedule, cost, quality, and reliability objectives from concept through production release.
What you'll do
The essential functions and key responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Own technical execution for development and NPI programs.
  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary design team by establishing clear technical direction, engineering rigor, and accountability while fostering a collaborative and execution-focused engineering culture.
  • Support design and NPI activities for derivative products and technology insertions based on legacy product lines.
  • Apply systems-engineering discipline to requirements interpretation and risk management.
  • Serve as the technical authority for design decisions, ensuring robust margins, appropriate derating, and defensible engineering rationale.
  • Act as a hands-on technical contributor, performing or reviewing electrical schematic design, circuit simulation, worst-case analysis, and stress/derating analyses.
  • Develop and review box-level hardware designs, including interface definitions, environmental considerations, and software interactions; support mechanical integration as applicable.
  • Ensure adherence to internal product development processes and design quality standards, including preparation for and participation in PDRs and CDRs.
  • Partner with Program Management to support development schedules, technical milestones, and risk management for NPI and development programs.
  • Support Operations and Manufacturing Engineering by incorporating manufacturability, testability, and producibility considerations into designs.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Quality, and Mission Assurance to incorporate manufacturability, producibility, reliability, and compliance considerations into designs.
  • Provide technical support during prototype build, validation, and early production phases as required.

What you'll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 7+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant experience - required
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and mentoring engineers - required
  • Strong proficiency with schematic capture and analysis tools (e.g., OrCAD, PSpice) - required
  • Broad, practical understanding of multidisciplinary engineering impacts (electrical, software, mechanical, materials) - required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills - required
  • Familiarity with high-reliability and military standards (e.g., MIL-PRF-19500, MIL-PRF-38534) - advantage
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary design and reliability analyses, including thermal, structural, optical, parts stress/PMPL, and failure-mode analysis techniques (e.g., FMEA) - advantage
  • Experience supporting NPI and development programs through production transition - advantage
  • Background working with Quality, Mission Assurance, and Operations teams in regulated environments - advantage
  • U.S. citizenship or US Persons Status (i.e. U.S. permanent resident) required (we do not sponsor work-related Visa's).

What we offer
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits
