Work EnvironmentDesign studios, R&D labs, cross-disciplinary teamsManufacturing plants, engineering firms, research labs
CertificationsOften requires industrial design or product development certificationsProfessional engineering licenses (PE), mechanical engineering certifications

Product Design Engineering and Mechanical Engineering share overlapping skills in CAD and prototyping but differ mainly in their focus. Product Design Engineers prioritize user experience and aesthetics, while Mechanical Engineers concentrate on mechanical systems and structural analysis. Both roles are vital in product development but serve different aspects of the engineering process.

What is product design engineering?

Product Design Engineering is a multidisciplinary field that combines principles of engineering, design, and manufacturing to create new products or improve existing ones. Professionals in this field are responsible for conceptualizing, designing, prototyping, and testing products to ensure they are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and manufacturable. They often work closely with teams from marketing, manufacturing, and user experience to bring innovative ideas to market. Product Design Engineers use tools such as CAD software and rapid prototyping to bring their concepts to life. Their work spans industries like consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and more.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product design engineer?

To thrive as a Product Design Engineer, a strong background in engineering principles, 3D modeling, and materials science is essential, typically supported by a degree in mechanical or product design engineering. Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD, and familiarity with prototyping tools and manufacturing processes, are commonly required. Creativity, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help engineers collaborate effectively and translate ideas into practical designs. These skills ensure innovative, manufacturable products that meet user needs and business goals.

How do product design engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development process?

Product Design Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams, including industrial designers, mechanical engineers, marketing specialists, and manufacturing personnel. They are often responsible for translating user requirements and design concepts into functional, manufacturable products by facilitating communication between departments. Regular meetings, design reviews, and prototype testing sessions are typical, ensuring all stakeholders are aligned and potential issues are addressed early. This collaborative environment enables Product Design Engineers to balance aesthetic, functional, and cost considerations effectively.

Job description

The group you'll be a part of
The Tualatin Pilot Engineering team is part of Global Operations, partnering with the design teams in Deposition Product Group and the operations teams in the Global Factory Network to execute high quality new product transitions. This organization drives high quality productivity, and innovative performance across Lam's Tualatin manufacturing operations within a culture centered on safety and continuous improvement.
The impact you'll make
As the Director of Manufacturing Engineering for the Tualatin Pilot Manufacturing team, you will lead the Manufacturing Engineering (ME) organization responsible for developing the Assembly and Test methods for transition to the Global Factory Network. You will be a champion of manufacturability in the Product Development & Release process, influencing product design decisions from concept through high-volume manufacturing transition.
In this role, you will lead the execution of Pilot engineering deliverables under the Product Development & Release process, continuously assessing methods to accelerate product transitions in support of our Shift Left objectives. You will scale the use of digital manufacturing technologies within your teams, delivering advanced assembly and test instructions early in the product lifecycle. Your leadership will bridge the evolving safety, cost, and cycle time needs of the Global Factory Network with the product design process. This role reports to the Senior Director of Tualatin Pilot Manufacturing.
What you'll do
Lead the transformation of the Tualatin Manufacturing Engineering team's methods and mission in support of Shift Left objectives, including the implementation of emerging Digital Manufacturing and AI tools.
Lead a team of Engineering Managers and Engineers who:
  • Develop manufacturing and test instructions based on design engineering inputs
  • Provide assembly and test engineering support to the Pilot Manufacturing team
  • Assess new products for manufacturability by creating scorecards and actively participating in design reviews
  • Diagnose and drive corrective action of issues identified in virtual and physical build by collaborating with design and quality engineering

Build a strong, capable, data driven engineering culture aligned with Lam's global manufacturing strategy.
Build relationships with peer executives in the product group and factory network.
Demonstrate effective influence on stakeholder decision making processes.
Who we're looking for
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent with 10+ years of experience in relevant operational or manufacturing engineering roles within a global, cross functional environment. An advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven ability to build teams, especially during periods of growth or transformation.
  • Background in manufacturing operations in electronics, aerospace, healthcare, or similar high complexity industries.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities, build a compelling vision, and lead multidisciplinary stakeholders through change.
  • Skilled at setting clear expectations, managing accountabilities, and resolving conflicts quickly.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with a strong leadership presence and the ability to influence through data.
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships across all levels of the organization and with global partners.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, vacuum integrity, and basic electrical component behavior.
  • Demonstrated leadership in fostering an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative culture.

Preferred qualifications
  • Strong working knowledge of manufacturing engineering principles, including hands-on experience managing and improving key operational metrics such as Statistical Process Control (SPC) and First-Pass Yield (FPY).
  • Lean/Six Sigma certification preferred, with demonstrated competence in structured, data driven problem solving.
