What are Processing Managers?

Processing Managers oversee and coordinate the workflow in facilities where raw materials or data are transformed into finished products or usable information. They are responsible for managing staff, ensuring production or processing targets are met, maintaining quality standards, and optimizing operational efficiency. Processing Managers often work in industries such as manufacturing, food production, and data processing. Their duties may also include ensuring compliance with safety regulations and troubleshooting process issues as they arise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Processing Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Processing Manager, you need strong organizational skills, experience in process optimization, and typically a degree in business, operations management, or a related field. Familiarity with workflow management systems, ERP software, and Lean Six Sigma certification are commonly required. Leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing teams and driving process improvements. These competencies ensure efficient operations, high productivity, and the ability to adapt to evolving business needs.

What are some common challenges faced by Processing Managers in coordinating cross-departmental workflows?

Processing Managers often encounter challenges when aligning priorities and timelines across multiple departments, such as production, quality assurance, and logistics. Effective communication and proactive problem-solving are essential to ensure that workflow bottlenecks are addressed quickly and that all teams remain informed about changes in schedules or requirements. Building strong relationships and establishing clear processes for information sharing can help minimize misunderstandings and keep operations running smoothly.

What is the difference between Processing Manager vs Processing Supervisor?

AspectProcessing ManagerProcessing Supervisor
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in business, operations, or related field; certifications like Six Sigma are commonOften requires similar education, with experience in processing or operations; certifications may be preferred
Work EnvironmentOversees multiple processing teams or departments, strategic planning, and process improvementsManages daily processing activities, supervises staff, and ensures workflow efficiency
Industry UsageCommonly used in banking, manufacturing, and logistics sectorsFrequent in banking, finance, and manufacturing industries

The Processing Manager focuses on strategic oversight and process optimization across departments, while the Processing Supervisor handles daily operations and team supervision. Both roles require similar credentials and are integral to efficient processing workflows in various industries.

Job description

Summary:

Waterton is a private mining firm focused on the acquisition, development, and operation of mining assets globally. Waterton actively manages its portfolio through a hands-on technical approach, supporting both operating mines and development projects with direct involvement in engineering, operational improvement, and project execution.

The company currently supports an operating base metal concentrator and a large-scale gold heap leach development project in the United States. Watertonโ€™s technical team works closely with site operations, engineering consultants, and corporate stakeholders to optimize asset performance and advance projects through engineering, construction, and eventual operations.

Position Overview

The Mineral Processing Manager will support the corporate technical team in providing metallurgical and processing support across Watertonโ€™s operating and development assets.

Based in Toronto, this role will work closely with the Director of Metallurgy & Process Development to support operational performance improvement, engineering review, and metallurgical analysis activities.

The position will focus on:

  • Operational metallurgical support for an operating Cu/Mo flotation concentrator
  • Metallurgical and engineering support for a large-scale gold heap leach development project
  • Day-to-day technical support for corporate metallurgical initiatives
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration with geology, mining, engineering, permitting and finance teams

The role provides exposure to both operational improvement in an active processing plant and engineering and procurement workflows for a major development project, with future involvement in project commissioning and operating activities.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Metallurgical Support

Provide metallurgical and analytical support to improve plant performance and stability at an operating flotation concentrator. Responsibilities include:

  • Analyze plant performance data including recovery, grade, throughput, and operating stability
  • Support debottlenecking and process optimization studies
  • Maintain performance tracking tools and KPIs
  • Evaluate circuit performance including grinding, flotation, thickening, and concentrate handling
  • Support reagent strategy evaluation and metallurgical testwork interpretation
  • Participate in site visits and technical plant reviews
  • Assist in troubleshooting metallurgical and process related operational issues
  • Prepare technical reports and recommendations to support operational improvement initiatives

Development Project Metallurgical Support

Support the metallurgical and process scope of a gold heap leach project during engineering and procurement. Responsibilities include:

  • Review process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, equipment specifications, and vendor packages
  • Provide technical input during engineering design reviews
  • Support metallurgical aspects of circuit design
  • Assist with process design validation and metallurgical testwork interpretation
  • Support evaluation of equipment sizing and design criteria
  • Participate in technical discussions with engineering consultants and vendors
  • Assist with identification and mitigation of metallurgical and process risks

Future development opportunities include participation in commissioning planning and operational readiness activities as the project advances.

Corporate Metallurgical Support

Provide day-to-day technical support to the corporate metallurgy and processing function.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparation of technical memoranda and metallurgical summaries
  • Support technical due diligence and internal project evaluations
  • Assist with coordination and review of metallurgical testwork programs
  • Support preparation and organization of technical data packages
  • Maintain and organize metallurgical datasets and process performance information

Cross-Discipline Collaboration

Work closely with multiple technical and commercial groups within Waterton.

Responsibilities include collaboration with:

  • Geology โ€“ ore characterization and variability
  • Mining โ€“ mine-to-mill coordination and feed variability
  • Engineering โ€“ process design reviews and equipment specifications
  • Permitting / Environmental โ€“ process inputs relevant to permitting and water management
  • Finance / Corporate Development โ€“ technical input to asset evaluations

Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Metallurgical, Mineral Processing, or Chemical Engineering
  • 6โ€“10+ years of experience in mineral processing or metallurgical operations
  • Experience in flotation concentrators and/or gold heap leach operations
  • Strong analytical capability with plant performance data and metallurgical accounting
  • Familiarity with process plant design reviews and equipment specifications
  • Ability to work effectively across both operational and project environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to travel periodically to site locations in the United States
