POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting for a Process Engineer to work at our Glenmore Office (Suite 240, 4000 Glenmore Court SE, Calgary, AB T2C 5R8) in Calgary, AB.ย  Theย  Process Engineer will be a key member of the Engineering team and interfaces with multiple engineering disciplines, business managers, project manager and customers. Reporting to the Process Engineering Lead, the Process Engineer will produce an economically superior design by employing a balance of cutting edge and proven technologies. This role will be accountable for the development and implementation of technical requirements along with the associated procedures for all process engineering responsibilities associated with, but not limited to compression, fractionation, refrigeration, and balance of plant utilities.

The Process Engineer will demonstrate expertise in developing and optimizing process simulations, equipment selection and sizing, process controls (development of control narrative & C&E) safety analyses (HAZOP) and design reviews for package modularization. The Process Engineer will be experienced with development and implementation of technical process requirements to integrate the balance of plant technical design with other engineering disciplines and equipment providers. This role contributes to the overall strategy and manages complex process issues from FEED stage to detailed engineering including but not limited to process oversight for equipment sizing, design, safety analyses, fabrication, and modularization of process equipment within the balance of plant scope.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):
DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT (Weighting 50%)

System Design & Development

  • Collaborate with the engineering team to design and develop the balance of plant systems, including water treatment, fuel handling, heating and cooling mediums, ventilation, and other auxiliary systems.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, process simulations, and engineering analyses to assess the technical and economic viability of proposed projects.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations governing power plant operations.
  • Conduct technical analyses, simulations, and modeling to assess the performance, efficiency, and reliability of balance of plant systems.

Equipment Selection & Specification

  • Evaluate and select appropriate equipment, materials, and technologies for the balance of plant systems.
  • Prepare technical specifications, data sheets, and engineering drawings for equipment procurement.
  • Coordinate with vendors, suppliers, and contractors to ensure the timely delivery and installation of equipment.

System Integration & Commissioning

  • Collaborate with the project team during the construction and commissioning phases to ensure successful integration of the balance of plant systems.
  • Conduct system testing, performance evaluation, and troubleshooting during the commissioning process.
  • Work closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure a smooth transition from construction to operation.
TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP (Weighting 30%)Documentation & Reportingย  ย 
  • Develop requirement hierarchy strategy and structure for the implementation of RM/RMT to capture the flow down of technical requirements from the basis of design, safety case development, EPC functional specification to the technical specifications and other design deliverables.
  • Generate technical reports, performance evaluations, and recommendations for system improvements.
  • Present findings and updates to management, project teams, and stakeholders.

Process Optimization & Efficiency

  • Optimize existing processes and develop new processes to meet project requirements, including safety, quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization, energy efficiency improvements, and cost reduction within the balance of plant systems.
  • Perform detailed analyses and studies to determine optimal operating conditions, equipment sizing, and process modifications.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to enhance system reliability, performance, and maintainability.

System Analysis & Evaluationย  ย 

  • Professionally respond to customer information requests, emergent plant issues and audits
  • Work as a member of the technical team to provide process engineering support for operations.
  • Provide technical advice/support to daily operational issues.
  • Perform unit optimization, troubleshooting, de-bottlenecking studies.
  • Lead/participate in safety initiatives including risk assessments and HAZOP review.
  • Analyze complex technical issues, identify key drivers, propose strategy/recommendations to support decision-making/resolution of technical issues.
  • Develop/execute margin improvement ideas/projects.
Health & Safety Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations in the design and operation of balance of plant systems.
  • Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship within the organization.
PROJECT COORDINATION (Weighting 20%)

Project Execution & Implementation

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineering teams, and stakeholders to develop project plans, objectives, and specifications.
  • Manage the implementation of process engineering activities within the project timeline and budget.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including process, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers, to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Conduct process testing, optimization, and troubleshooting during the commissioning and startup phases.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, project managers, operations personnel, and external stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and operation of the balance of plant systems.
  • Provide technical support and expertise to operations and maintenance teams, assisting with troubleshooting and problem-solving.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field (required).
  • Proven experience as a Process Engineerย or similar role in a power generation or industrial plant environment.
  • Strong knowledge of balance of plant systems and processes, including water treatment, fuel handling, cooling and heating, product storage, ventilation, and auxiliary systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry codes, standards, and regulations governing power plant operations.
  • Experience with process simulations and modeling software.
  • Experience with equipment sizing, control valve sizing & PSV sizing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Understanding of health, safety, and environmental practices in power plant operations.
