What Is a Process Technician?

A process technician—or industrial engineering technician—oversees the setup and monitoring of industrial equipment under the guidance of an industrial engineer. As a process technician, your responsibilities include following the direction of the engineer, interpreting technical drawings to assemble and install industrial equipment on site, and ensure that equipment is running effectively. You may work in a variety of industries, such as manufacturing, oil and gas, and health care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Technician, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in process technology or a related technical field, often supported by an associate degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with process control systems, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), and safety protocols is typically required. Effective problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help process technicians quickly address operational issues and collaborate across departments. These competencies ensure efficient production, maintain high safety standards, and minimize downtime in manufacturing or processing environments.

What are some common challenges Process Technicians face when troubleshooting equipment issues?

Process Technicians often encounter challenges when diagnosing and resolving equipment malfunctions, especially in fast-paced manufacturing environments. These can include identifying root causes under time pressure, dealing with complex machinery that requires specialized knowledge, and coordinating with engineering or maintenance teams to implement solutions. Staying up-to-date with equipment manuals, standard operating procedures, and safety protocols is crucial. Effective communication and a methodical approach help technicians minimize downtime and maintain production quality.

What are process technicians?

Process technicians are skilled professionals who operate, monitor, and maintain equipment used in manufacturing or industrial processes. They ensure that production runs smoothly, efficiently, and safely by following standard operating procedures and troubleshooting issues as they arise. Process technicians often work in industries like pharmaceuticals, chemicals, oil and gas, and food production. Their responsibilities can include quality control, recording data, and collaborating with engineers and other staff to optimize processes.

Process Technician - Keep the World's Most Advanced Production Running
A job at TSMC Arizona offers an opportunity to work at the most advanced semiconductor fab in the United States. TSMC Arizona's first fab will operate it's leading-edge semiconductor process technology (N4 process), starting production in the first half of 2025. The second fab will utilize its leading edge N3 and N2 process technology and be operational in 2028. The recently announced third fab will manufacture chips using 2nm or even more advanced process technology, with production starting by the end of the decade. America's leading technology companies are ready to rely on TSMC Arizona for the next generations of chips that will power the digital future.
At TSMC Arizona, Process Technicians are not just operators-they are the production guardians of the most advanced semiconductor fab in the U.S. When you are on shift, you hold direct responsibility for production stability, making time-critical decisions, and ensuring billions of transistors are manufactured flawlessly. Your judgment directly affects wafer yield, line stability, and multi-million-dollar tool performance.
Module Process Technician
Our Process Technicians are assigned to specialized engineering modules, such as Lithography (LIT), Etch (ETC), Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), Diffusion (DIF), Epitaxy (EPI), Chemical Mechanical Polish (CMP), Metrology (ME), and Yield Excellence (YED). Each module plays a critical role in semiconductor manufacturing, and technicians are trusted to maintain stability and quality within their assigned area.
Quick Snapshot of Your Role
  1. Monitor & Operate Automated Systems
Independently run production shifts by monitoring wafer flow, tool performance, and system dashboards to ensure every step meets standard.
  2. Respond to Alarms & Analyze Data
Act immediately when alarms occur, apply decision trees/SOPs, and collect system data to trace abnormalities and prevent recurrence.
  3. Collaborate Across Teams for Stability
Work closely with engineers and teammates to restore stability, refine procedures, and drive continuous improvements.
  4. Manage Multiple Tasks & System Checks
Balance lots, system alerts, and tool checks in parallel to set the right priorities to safeguard yield and production output.

What You Will Do
  1. Run Production Shifts: Operate and oversee automated systems that control wafer flow and tool performance.
  2. Respond with Speed & Judgment: Resolve abnormalities following SOPs and decision trees, while applying judgment for urgent cases outside SOP coverage.
  3. Analyze Data for Insights: Use system tools and reports to identify patterns, trace root causes, and document solutions.
  4. Coordinate with Engineers: Collaborate to troubleshoot issues, stabilize processes, and continuously improve line performance.
  5. Grow into Leadership: With experience, take on shift coordination, lead daily meetings, and mentor junior teammates that leads to opportunities in shift leadership and cross-team improvement projects.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

  • This role requires regular rotation between day and night shifts to meet production needs.
  • While the role is primarily office-based, occasional entry into the cleanroom environment (with protective gowning) is required.

Training & Growth
  • Structured Onboarding (6-9 months): Includes SOP training, OJT, shadowing, and simulation.
  • Skill Development: Advance from mastering operations and systems to independent decision-making, to leadership responsibilities.
  • Transparent Career Progression: Build long-term growth opportunities in technical expertise, shift leadership, and cross-department projects.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree (any field of study) preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in a non-STEM discipline may also be considered (STEM bachelor's degree holders are encouraged to apply for Engineer roles).
