Job description

Space Center Houston is a space exploration learning destination dedicated to revealing how science and humanity power space exploration through meaningful, moving experiences about people and the courage, innovation, and teamwork they use to expand the boundaries of what's possible. We inspire guests of all ages to connect with the significance of space exploration as incredible feats of human spaceflight continue to bring joy and wonder to the world. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, we are the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian affiliate.
We are currently seeking a full-time Safety Manager responsible for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies, programs, and procedures that protect employees, guests, and mission-critical operations. This role ensures full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations while advancing Space Center Houston's commitment to excellence, education, and guest engagement.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety policies and procedures aligned with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Ensure full organizational compliance with OSHA standards and all applicable safety regulations; maintain current knowledge of evolving legislation and industry best practices.
  • Maintain required OSHA documentation, including accurate and timely filing of OSHA 300, 300A, and 200 logs.
  • Lead center-wide safety programs, training initiatives, committee meetings, and incentive programs that reinforce a strong safety culture.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are implemented promptly.
  • Analyze safety data and trends to recommend improvements, including new technologies, systems, or processes that enhance safety performance.
  • Lead investigations of workplace accidents, injuries, and near-misses; perform root-cause analysis and develop preventive strategies.
  • Support staff during emergency responses, alarms, and critical incidents, ensuring appropriate decision-making and adherence to established protocols.
  • Manage and assist with Space Center Houston's security and life-safety systems to ensure proper operation, testing, and effectiveness.
  • Maintain strong working relationships and communication channels with NASA Johnson Space Center safety and local emergency management personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, inspections, training, and compliance activities.
  • Prepare and present regular safety performance reports, metrics, and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Establish and cultivate relationships with external agencies, regulatory bodies, and industry partners to support compliance and operational readiness.
  • Assist with monitoring and managing maintenance agreements with outside vendors, contractors, and service providers.
  • Support development and management of the safety department budget, including labor forecasting and general expenses.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations, committees, and associations to stay informed on emerging trends and future changes in the safety field.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in the safety field, including supervisory or managerial responsibilities.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Strong technical knowledge of OSHA, life-safety regulations, and industry standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership, conflict-resolution, and organizational skills with the ability to influence across departments.
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
  • Capable of making sound, timely decisions in high-pressure emergency situations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • High level of discretion, judgment, and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn and utilize various software platforms.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Availability to respond to emergencies and work extended hours during critical incidents.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES/WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to move throughout a large public facility, including indoor and outdoor environments, for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb stairs, ramps, and occasionally ladders when accessing mechanical rooms, rooftops, or restricted areas.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or remain mobile during inspections, emergency responses, or incident follow-ups.
  • Ability to hear and respond to alarms, radio communications, and verbal instructions in dynamic environments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally during emergencies, drills, and interactions with staff, guests, and first responders
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, or cold during outdoor inspections or emergency responses.
  • Ability to respond quickly and safely to minor emergencies, alarms, or safety incidents anywhere on campus.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, or reach as needed to assess hazards, inspect equipment, or assist with minor cleanup or containment.

Ability to lift, carry, or move equipment or materials up to 25-35 pounds (e.g., safety cones, barricades, spill kits, fire extinguishers).
