What is process engineering?

Process engineering is a field of engineering focused on designing, implementing, controlling, and optimizing industrial processes, particularly in manufacturing and chemical production. Process engineers work to develop efficient systems for transforming raw materials into finished products, ensuring safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness. They apply principles from chemistry, physics, and mathematics to solve production problems and improve processes. Process engineering is essential in industries such as oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and energy.

What is the difference between Process Engineering vs Chemical Engineering?

AspectProcess EngineeringChemical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering; often certifications like Six SigmaBachelor's or higher in Chemical Engineering; professional engineer (PE) license may be preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, process facilities, industrial settingsResearch labs, chemical plants, design offices
Industry UsageFocuses on optimizing manufacturing processes and production efficiencyDesigns chemical processes, develops new chemicals, and research

Process Engineering primarily concentrates on improving and maintaining manufacturing processes within industrial settings, while Chemical Engineering involves designing chemical processes and developing new chemical products. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and often overlap in industry applications, but their core focus areas differ.

What do process engineers do?

Process engineers design, develop, and optimize manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, safety, and quality. They analyze production systems, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements using tools like process flow diagrams and statistical analysis. Their work often involves collaboration with other engineering teams and adherence to safety and environmental regulations.

What are some common challenges faced by process engineers when implementing process improvements in a manufacturing environment?

Process engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from operators and staff, integrating new technologies with legacy systems, and ensuring that improvements do not disrupt ongoing production. Balancing cost-effectiveness with quality and safety standards can also be demanding. Successful process engineers collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, provide clear communication, and use data-driven approaches to overcome these obstacles and drive continuous improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Process Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Process Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering. Familiarity with process simulation software (like Aspen Plus or AutoCAD), Six Sigma certification, and experience with quality management systems are often required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and teamwork are essential soft skills to excel in cross-functional projects and drive continuous improvement. These skills ensure efficient production processes, cost reduction, and consistent product quality within manufacturing or industrial environments.

Job description

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Process Technology Engineer to play a pivotal role in advancing our seawater-to-jet fuel pilot plant and preparing the technology for commercial scale-up. This is a hands-on technical leadership position focused on operational excellence, capital project execution, and technology evaluation in the emerging Power-to-Liquid / e-fuels sector. The ideal candidate will bring deep process engineering expertise, preferably in carbon capture, syngas chemistry, or synthetic fuel production and will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where pilot-scale innovation directly informs multi-million-dollar scale-up decisions.
What We Offer
โ€ข The opportunity to shape the future of sustainable aviation fuel at the intersection of cutting-edge science and commercial deployment.
โ€ข Competitive compensation package:
โ€ข Salary $150K - $190K annual
โ€ข Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance
โ€ข Short- and Long-Term Disability and Term Life Plan
โ€ข 401(k) retirement plan with employer contribution
โ€ข Paid Time Off (PTO)
โ€ข Paid Holidays and Sick Leave
โ€ข A collaborative, mission-driven culture focused on innovation and climate impact.
Key Responsibilities
1

Operational Technical Support for a Seawater-to-Jet Fuel Pilot Plant (Direct Ocean Capture)
โ€ข Deliver process engineering support to ensure safe, reliable, and optimized operation of the pilot facility.
โ€ข Troubleshoot process upsets, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions for key unit operations including CO capture, hydrogen production/integration, syngas synthesis, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and product upgrading.
โ€ข Monitor process data, develop and maintain performance metrics, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to increase yield, reduce downtime, and improve energy efficiency.
โ€ข Support HAZOPs, safety reviews, and management-of-change (MOC) processes for pilot-plant modifications.โ€ข Collaborate closely with operations, maintenance, and analytical teams to translate pilot data into actionable insights.
2. Leadership of CAPEX Projects (up to $5-100 million)
โ€ข Lead multidisciplinary capital projects from concept through commissioning, including feasibility studies, front-end engineering design (FEED), detailed design, procurement, construction, and start-up.
โ€ข Develop project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and risk registers; ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and meet technical and safety requirements.
โ€ข Manage external engineering firms, vendors, and contractors while maintaining strict cost and schedule control.
โ€ข Conduct post-project evaluations and capture lessons learned to refine future scale-up strategies.
3. Identification and Vetting of Critical Technologies for Future Scale-Up
โ€ข Scout, evaluate, and recommend emerging and commercially ready technologies in CO capture/utilization, hydrogen integration, synthesis gas generation, synthetic fuel synthesis, and downstream refining/upgrading.
โ€ข Assist in techno-economic analyses (TEA) modeling, technology readiness level (TRL) assessments, and risk evaluations to support go/no-go decisions for scale-up deployment.
โ€ข Build and maintain technology roadmaps that align pilot learnings with commercial plant design basis.
โ€ข Establish and manage relationships with technology providers, universities, and research organizations.
โ€ข Prepare technical reports, white papers, and presentations for internal stakeholders and potential investors or partners.
Required Qualifications
โ€ข Bachelor's or Master's degree in chemical engineering or mechanical engineering (or equivalent).
โ€ข Minimum 10 years of progressive process engineering or process technology experience in the chemical, petrochemical, refining, or energy industries.
