BASIC FUNCTION:

This position also known as a Process Engineer will assist the the Melt Shop leadership, department superintendents, and plant management in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of all improvement aspects within their area of responsibility. The major role of this job is to focus on continuous casting (steel) improvement and integration of improvement principles, technical and engineering principles, identifying best practices, consistent application of the methodology to stabilize operations and act as a change agent to help achieve a higher level of results within the assigned location by utilizing and implementing improvement processes.

DIMENSIONS:

This position serves in as process engineer with continuous casting background. No direct reports. Serves as a coach to all production and maintenance employees, and plant management. Primary responsibility and accountability rests with higher levels of supervision.

NATURE AND SCOPE

The major role of this job is to identify opportunities for improvement in processes, products, and production within the area of responsibility. These duties will include the development and implementation of new as well as adjusting existing standards, structures, systems, and equipment. This position is responsible to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of all improvement aspects within their area of responsibility. Incumbent will be responsible for reaching improvement through the application of the available methods and tools provided through Gerdau Systems improvement principles in conjunction with the use of technical and engineering principles. Responsible for coordinating improvement activities directly with the appropriate Superintendent, leadership, and staff within area of responsibility.

Qualifications for this position include a four year college degree in Engineering, Business Administration or Material Science combined with 3 to 5 years experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment with exposure to standardization and production quality methods. Incumbent must have a strong working knowledge of steel manufacturing methods and techniques involving the use of heavy mill machinery and related equipment. Previous qualifying experience in scrap processing, melting, casting, rolling, maintenance, finishing, shipping/warehouse operations, and supervisory/facilitation a must. Successful candidate will demonstrate an advanced knowledge in the melt shop area, focused on the casting process of steel fabrication, and the use of complex technical and engineering processes. Requires the ability to train people and serve as a coach to employees. The incumbent should possess solid presentation abilities combined with good interpersonal and organizational skills.

This position directly reports to the Area Manager. The incumbent will coordinate efforts with the different functional groups both within area of responsibility and other areas of the location. The incumbent would be detail oriented and must be comfortable dealing with associates at all levels within the organization. The incumbent will be responsible for the oversight, contribution to, and support of all the trainings and development activities for employees of the location.

The Process Engineer  will assist location management with the Annual Action Plan and the administration of established policies, procedures, and processes. This job is responsible for CAPEX projects and compiling and analyzing project data. This position will have moderate scope and breadth of responsibility for material manufacturing processes as well as the multitude and complexity of the equipment utilized in the manufacturing process. There is a moderate level of budgetary and CAPEX related expenditures. The incumbent will coach employees on QIS improvement methodologies.

The primarily responsibility for this job is the oversight, contribution to, and support of Gerdau processes, 5S initiatives, failure analysis, results management, Improvement projects, 6 Sigma and other process improvement methodologies. The incumbent will be responsible for the oversight, contribution to, and support of all the safety activities. The incumbent must possess good communication skills, have the ability to articulate ideas, give feedback, resolve conflicts, and point out areas where improvement is needed, as well as the ability to develop a positive relationship with employees in order to develop credibility. Must be results oriented and have the ability to motivate others.

The incumbent must perform the above mentioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations.  Employees must also report any situation that may have a detrimental impact to human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Maintain goal and project data bases. Perform trend analysis on the performance data as well as identify commonalities within the data.
  2. Participate and contribute to the achievement of department goals including goal setting.     
  3. Facilitate training sessions for all employees on the improvement methodologies, tools, policies, practices, and processes.
  4. Develop and coach employees on capabilities and knowledge in the application of the QIS methodology and participate (as needed) in QIS events.
  5. Collaborate with leadership on subjects pertaining to the routine and improvement processes, improvement standards, CAPEX standards, audits, 5S initiatives, failure analysis, results management, QIS, FA, 6 Sigma, and other process improvement methodologies.
  6. Identify and solve chronic/repetitive problems and failures as well as reduce process variation.
  7. Assist with the development of the Annual Action Plan, and the administration of established policies, practices, and procedures.
  8. Prepare and approve standards from CAPEX and improvement initiatives.
  9. Implement and coordinate CAPEX projects, and Annual Action Plan Improvement Projects.
  10. Oversee, contribute to, and support daily improvement management activities, which include providing timely and accurate cost estimates on proposed improvement efforts.
  11. Provide consulting services to the departments on improvement methodologies and tools. Design new and revamp existing structures, systems, and equipment.
  12. Provide support in implementation, maintenance, and follow up on the vertical and horizontal help chain.
  13. Assist with all safety activities
