Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA) is looking for a Controls Engineer - Chiller to join our team. This is a hybrid role based out of our Plano, Texas, location.

SCOPE:
The Control Engineer (Chiller) is responsible for control system engineering for centrifugal chiller and Modular Chiller Plant (MCP) products, including control logic development and review, interface definition, and coordination with internal teams, suppliers, and customers. This role supports the development and deployment of advanced cooling solutions for data center applications in North America, working closely with key stakeholders such as data center operators, infrastructure providers, and technology partners. The position plays a critical role in aligning system architecture, ensuring integration across mechanical, electrical, and control domains, and enabling scalable, modular solutions. The position contributes to the full lifecycle of products and projects, including early-stage concept development, technical proposal support, detailed design coordination, testing, commissioning, and ongoing optimization. The role also supports the development of next-generation products through collaboration with customers and external partners. This position collaborates with global stakeholders across Japan and the U.S. to align priorities, enable effective execution, and support MHIA's long-term business objectives.
The ideal candidate will have at least seven (7) years of experience in control system design or engineering for HVAC, centrifugal chiller (TRANE or JCI), or industrial systems.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and Development
  • Develop and review control logic for centrifugal chiller and MCP systems, ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability
  • Define system architecture and control strategies, including temperature, flow, and energy optimization control
  • Design and validate control interfaces between chillers, auxiliary equipment (pumps, valves), and supervisory systems (BMS/DCIM)
  • Support the development of advanced controls, including automation, optimization, and future digital integration
  • Own design calculations and analysis packages (load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, harmonics, transients/dynamic performance) and maintain traceability to requirements.

System Integration & Interface Management
  • Define interface requirements and responsibility boundaries among internal teams, customers, and suppliers
  • Ensure alignment of control systems with mechanical and electrical system configurations
  • Coordinate system integration across multiple vendors and subsystems
  • Support troubleshooting and issue resolution related to control system performance

Customer & Specification Alignment
  • Translate customer requirements into clear control system specifications and functional requirements
  • Act as a technical interface with customers, partners, and suppliers during pre- and post-award phases
  • Respond to technical inquiries and drive alignment on system functionality and interfaces
  • Support evaluation and selection of control system suppliers and components

Project Execution Support
  • Support proposal development by defining control system scope, assumptions, and technical solutions
  • Ensure alignment on scope, schedule, and deliverables across stakeholders
  • Participate in testing, commissioning, and site validation activities as needed
  • Support the continuous improvement of engineering processes and standardization
  • Product & Technology Development
  • Contribute to the development of next-generation cooling products, including MCP and modularized systems
  • Identify opportunities for performance improvement, cost reduction, and enhanced functionality
  • Monitor market trends and emerging technologies in control systems, data center cooling, and automation
  • Lead vendor design reviews and manage deviation/issue closure through corrective actions and design improvements.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Required Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering field
  • Experience: Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in control system design or engineering for HVAC, centrifugal chiller (TRANE or JCI), or industrial systems
  • Strong understanding of control logic, PLC/DDC systems, and industrial automation
  • Experience with system integration and interface definition across multiple disciplines
  • Ability to read and develop control diagrams, sequences of operation, and functional specifications
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
o Master's in electrical engineering, Control Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
o Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in control system engineering for HVAC, chiller, or industrial systems
o Proven track record developing new and innovative control solutions or products, and seeing them to successful market entry
o Proven track record in project management, customer interface and support, and project testing and commissioning
