Job description

SUMMARY: The Engineering Manager and Engineering Team will be responsible for providing technical support for all aspects of production from design release forward. The Engineering Manager will take the lead in engineering activities in the area of injection and blow molding, drilling operations, heat staking, welding and assembly, in order to obtain optimum productivity and quality levels while complying with customer specifications.

The Engineering Manager is responsible for the overall development and administration of the Engineering Process at the TWID Tiffin Plant. Through input from the customer, corporate and plant staff, the Engineering Manager will allocate resources to manufacture quality products in an effective and economical manner. The primary responsibilities will be to establish and review process controls, emphasize continuous improvement through Lean Manufacturing methodology and Kaizen activities, to participate in the development of cell and overall plant layouts, set up reduction (SN/IED), lead time reduction, improve productivity through waste reduction. In addition, the Engineering Manager will be responsible for achieving product target cost, improved efficiency, identifying possible production problems for existing products.

As a part of the plant leadership team, the Engineering Manager will be involved with determining project capital needs, launch strategies, project timing, process flows, labor and machine standards. All proposed plans for changes to the process, equipment, molds, and tooling are to be reviewed by the Engineering Manager to ensure reliability and compatibility with existing Toledo Molding and Die standards/systems.

Finally, Manager will be required to support multiple projects and work with the plant to obtain third part registration to ISO/TS 16949 standards.

The Engineering Manager reports directly to the Plant Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Support product launch strategy
  • Support and maintain project timeline
  • Participate in identifying open items issues
  • Determines staffing needs and employee development requirements
  • Completed annual personnel performance appraisals and training objectives
  • Review mold and secondary fixture design and make recommendations
  • Develop workflow, effective layout and optimize processes
  • Assist in quoting and contracting tool sources to build support tooling
  • Evaluate and implement process/product improvements
  • Work with the team to develop tooling and poke yoke methods
  • Assist with training of both technical and production in processing standards
  • Develops short and long term strategy to support customer requirements
  • Authorizes engineering change notices (deviations), process alerts, purchase orders, equipment spare parts inventory, and personnel training requests
  • Supports plant safety rules, UAW contract, procedures and standards
  • Approves department expenses and appropriations requirements
  • Leads Manufacturing Engineers in the development of project launch strategy, capital needs, program timing in support of all APQP, PPAP, and ISO/TS 16949 requirements

  • Program status reports (i.e., top five ppm's, open items, corrective action plans, etc.)
  • Maintain records for primary tools (molds) and selected secondary equipment
  • Annual personnel performance reviews
  • Prioritize personnel and resources as activities require
  • Leads customer/plant continuous improvement programs
  • Establishes overall department goals and plans
  • Assigns Engineers to program teams
  • Develop and maintain favorable customer relations
  • Follows all safety, housekeeping and company policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates and maintains all job responsibilities in a continuous and flexible manner and performs other related duties and job assignments as required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelors Degree - technical required. WIBA a plus. A minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar role. Automotive industry experience. High product launch exposure a plus. Plastics experience preferred.
