Job description

The Process Engineer will be involved in all aspects of the wallboard manufacturing process (production, maintenance, capital, etc.). The Process Engineer will gain exposure to plant operations as well as supervisory exposure by overseeing the milling and calcination operations. This position is a key member of the plant management team and has influence and shared accountability for plant safety, quality, cost performance and assurance of long-term viability and success.

The position will administer American Gypsum policies and procedures to establish and promote safe and healthy working conditions while ensuring compliance with all MSHA, OSHA, DOT regulations and American Gypsum Safety Program requirements.ย  ย The candidate for the Process Engineer position must be motivated and strive to grow into a plant management position with greater responsibility in the future.

REGULAR DUTIES

  • Establish and maintain safe working conditions and procedures. Ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner.
  • Develop personal ย knowledge ย of ย the ย wallboard ย production ย process ย and equipment.
  • Develop personal knowledge of wallboard quality including ASTM and UL requirements.
  • Develop personal knowledge of common wallboard defects and solutions.
  • Develop personal knowledge of wallboard formulations.
  • Work in conjunction with other department managers & employees to solve problems and improve plant safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Execute capital and major maintenance projects.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to increase efficiency.
  • Maintain proactive working habits to improve performance of crew and daily operations.
  • Develop a detailed technical knowledge of processes and equipment along with the control systems in order to support operations and maintenance.
  • Develop ย personalย  ย knowledgeย  ย ofย  ย Americanย  ย Gypsumย  ย Companyย  ย policies, procedures, and culture.
  • Oversee the milling and calcination operations to ensure sufficient stucco supply for wallboard production.
  • Manage long term capital and operations planning for the mine and ore haul departments.
  • All other duties and responsibilities, as assigned.

MINIMUM QULAIFICATIONS

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in engineering strongly preferred; Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Chemical, or Industrial.
  • Two or more years of experience working within an industrial operation.ย  Management experience preferred.
  • Experience preparing ย and ย submitting ย requests ย for ย capital ย and ย project management.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong information gathering, investigative, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong computer skills and capability to develop and update maps, sketches, and prints.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to handle multiple projects and timelines.
  • Must possess technical skills and abilities that are generally expected from degreed engineers.
  • Strong organizational ย skills ย with ย the ย ability ย to ย develop ย detailed ย plans ย to accomplish business goals then execute the plan.
  • Must be able to adapt to changing conditions to achieve set business goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Safety -ย Actively ย implement ย and ย participate ย in ย all ย safety ย programs, ย rules, ย and procedures. Maintain proactive working habits with all plant personnel to continuously improve overall safety. Maintain safe working conditions through established housekeeping programs. Position is responsible for the safety performance of those under direct supervision. Ensure compliance with all American Gypsum Safety Program requirements.

Quality - Supervise the milling and calcination of gypsum that meets or exceeds companyย  ย andย  ย allย  ย boardย  ย plantย  ย requirements.ย  ย Activelyย  ย implementย  ย and participate ย in ย all ย product ย quality ย programs ย and ย procedures.ย  Maintainย proactive working habits with all plant personnel to continuously improveย overall product quality. Position is responsible for the quality of all products, and the performance of those under direct supervision. Become familiar withย the quality of finished wallboard that is produced.

Training -ย Develop, evaluate, and motivate new and existing employees to ensure skilled performance in the areas of safety, product quality, and equipment operations. Identify deficiencies within those under direct supervision andย develop plans to realize improvements.ย ย  Self-motivate to expand personal knowledge of all aspects of the wallboard production process.

Production -ย Achieve company production goals, supply the board plant with quality materials and maintain appropriate inventory levels. Complete all necessary reporting ย for ย accurate ย recording. ย Recommend ย improvements ย to ย improveย overall operations. Position is responsible for operating efficiencies of team, including mining and material transport.

Plant Availability -ย Assist with the investigation and diagnosis of mill operating programs. Recommend ย and ย initiate ย courses ย of ย action ย to ย theย  ย Plant ย Manager ย forย improvements. Be available for any issues and/or problems that may arise within area of responsibility. Be available 24/7 as needed to support plant operations.

Maintenance -ย Ensure proper use and preservation of all equipment and facilities to ensure long term continuity of operations. Maintain proactive working habits toย improve overall reliability of equipment through communication. Take an active role in troubleshooting upset conditions to assist in resolving equipment issues.

Company Policies -ย Participate in and implement all established company policies. Act as a role model in compliance and enforcement for all personnel.

Plant Knowledge -ย Actively engage in plant processes. ย Expand knowledge of wallboard making process. ย Assist with projects & troubleshooting as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed mainly in the mine, manufacturing plant, and office.
  • Normal work hours are Monday โ€“ Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ย Must be available for call-ins to assist in diagnosing departmental/equipment upsets. Occasional weekend work on special projects may be necessary.
