Job Description
About the Role
The Plumbing Engineer Intern is an entry-level internship position that performs job functions under the direct supervision of a project's Engineer-of-Record and/or Lead Plumbing Engineer. This internship provides hands-on exposure to the design and engineering of sanitary waste drainage and vent systems, storm water systems, plumbing services, and other building support systems within the built environment.
Interns will gain real-world experience supporting project teams across multiple phases of design while developing foundational technical and professional skills in a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting.
Key Responsibilities
  • Support plumbing engineering design efforts, including drainage and fixture calculations, utility assessments, design reports, code evaluations, and plumbing service plans
  • Assist with the preparation of drawings, schedules, installation details, and specifications
  • Utilize computer-aided drafting and engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) under supervision
  • Support the basic design and layout of plumbing systems in conformance with applicable codes and standards
  • Help coordinate plumbing designs with other disciplines to ensure integrated project solutions
  • Assist in the preparation of project deliverables across various phases of design, including:
    • Studies
    • Conceptual and schematic design
    • Design development
    • Construction documentation
    • Construction administration
  • Conduct basic field investigations to help integrate designs with existing systems and structures
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, designers, and other internal and external team members to support a coordinated, constructible, and complete design
  • Work on tasks of fundamental and basic complexity in a support role under the direction of experienced engineers and designers

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing an ABET-accredited Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
    • (or Architectural Engineering with a Mechanical option)
  • Strong interest in building systems design and the AEC industry
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-based, collaborative environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Exposure to or coursework involving plumbing systems, mechanical systems, or building infrastructure
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or Revit preferred
  • Interest in LEED, WELL, or other sustainable design principles
  • Basic understanding of engineering calculations related to plumbing systems (sanitary, vent, storm, service piping)
  • Introductory knowledge of plumbing codes and industry standards
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interface with internal team members and external partners
  • Willingness to learn and contribute to cross-disciplinary coordination effort
