What is a probation manager?

Probation Managers are professionals who oversee the work of probation officers and ensure that individuals on probation comply with the terms set by the court. They are responsible for supervising staff, managing caseloads, developing rehabilitation programs, and ensuring that policies and procedures are followed. Probation Managers also coordinate with law enforcement, courts, and community organizations to support the successful reintegration of offenders into society. Their role is crucial in balancing public safety with the rehabilitation of offenders.

What are some common challenges faced by probation managers in supervising both staff and caseloads?

Probation Managers often encounter the challenge of balancing administrative responsibilities with direct staff supervision and oversight of complex caseloads. Managing staff performance, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards, and addressing resource limitations can be demanding. Additionally, they must handle high-stress situations, such as crises involving offenders, while fostering a supportive and collaborative team environment. Effective communication, organizational skills, and adaptability are key to successfully navigating these challenges and promoting positive outcomes for both staff and clients.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a probation manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Probation Manager, you need expertise in criminal justice, case management, and leadership, typically supported by a relevant degree and professional experience in probation or corrections. Familiarity with case management software, risk assessment tools, and knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks is essential. Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and organizational skills help in supervising staff and collaborating with justice system stakeholders. These skills ensure effective oversight of probation officers, compliance with legal standards, and successful rehabilitation outcomes for clients.

In this role, you'll work alongside public safety personnel, code compliance and parks staff, healthcare providers, community organizations, and social service agencies to provide crisis intervention, behavioral health support, case management, outreach, and care coordination. Every day will offer the opportunity to de-escalate crises, connect individuals with meaningful resources and help create safe outcomes for both residents and the community.
Using trauma informed, recovery-oriented, and person-centered practices, you'll support individuals in reducing unnecessary emergency department visits and involvement with the criminal justice system while improving long-term stability and quality of life. This position requires sound professional judgment, strong relationship building skills, and a genuine commitment to meeting people where they are with empathy, respect, and hope.
This is a benefitted, fixed-term position funded through the current fiscal year (June 30, 2027). The hiring range is up to $75,000 annually, depending on qualifications.
If you're looking for an opportunity where every interaction has the potential to change a life, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful difference every single day.
What You'll Do
No two days are the same on the Triage Team. One moment you may be helping someone experiencing a behavioral health crisis and the next you may be helping families navigate some of life's most challenging circumstances while making a meaningful impact on the Peoria community.
In this role, you'll:
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to respond to behavioral health crises.
  • Build relationships that change lives by engaging individuals experiencing mental illness, substance use disorders, homelessness and other challenges.
  • Develop individualized case management plans, provide counseling, and connect individuals with behavioral health treatment, housing, healthcare, employment and other community resources.
  • Be an advocate for the community by representing the city through outreach events, public education and stakeholder engagement.
  • Make an impact by advocating for vulnerable residents, reducing unnecessary emergency and justice-system involvement, all while using data and best practices to continually strengthen services.

Note: This list does not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent in this position. If you are interested, talented and influential, please apply!
What Makes You a Great Fit
The ideal candidate is someone who believes that compassion and accountability go hand in hand. They understand that every interaction has the potential to change someone's day - or even their life. You'll thrive in this position if you:
  • Build trust with ease and can connect with people from all walks of life through empathy, respect and active listening.
  • Remain calm under pressure, using sound judgement and de-escalation skills to navigate complex or emotionally charged situations.
  • Enjoy solving problems by looking beyond immediate challenges to identify creative, long-term solutions.
  • Adapt quickly and are energized by work that is dynamic, meaningful and constantly evolving.
  • Are a Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager or Certified Behavioral Health Specialist.
  • Have a working knowledge of crisis intervention principles, motivational intervention, substance abuse and harm reduction practices and behavioral health navigation.

If you are looking for an opportunity where your expertise, compassion and commitment can have a lasting impact on individuals, families and the community, we'd love to hear from you.
