Title: Per Diem School Security Guard
Work Year: 10-Month
Department: District Wide
FLSA Status: Represented, Non-Exempt
Reports To: Director of Security
Hourly Rate: $24.87
Position Overview:
School Security Guards are responsible for the overall safety and security of Branford Public Schools facilities and grounds. The Security Guard's primary responsibility is to support the instructional process by focusing on the safety and welfare of students and staff while on school grounds through the enforcement of school and district rules, regulations, and policies. This position provides a visible and professional presence and responds to a variety of routine and emergent situations to maintain a safe and secure school environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety and Security Monitoring
  • Patrol and monitor the interior and exterior of school facilities and grounds to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Ensure security of doors, windows, and gates and detect signs of intrusion.
  • Monitor and authorize the entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons.
  • Operate and monitor security systems, to identify visitors, investigate incidents, and detect potential issues.
  • Operate detection devices as needed to prevent passage of prohibited items into restricted areas.

Incident Response and Emergency Support
  • Respond to alarms, calls for assistance, and a variety of emergent situations (e.g., accidents, injuries, vandalism, disturbances).
  • Investigate disturbances and take appropriate action to resolve immediate safety or security concerns.
  • Call police, fire, or emergency medical services as needed.
  • Assist the school nurse in the management of emergency medical situations.
  • Assist building administrators with planning and implementing required safety and crisis drills.

Student Supervision and School Support
  • Monitor student behavior during and between assigned periods and at school events (e.g., cafeteria, assemblies, classrooms with substitutes).
  • Build positive relationships with students, staff, and visitors to support a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Communicate school safety policies and enforcement procedures and use appropriate techniques to resolve issues.
  • Warn individuals of rule infractions or violations and remove unauthorized persons from premises when necessary.

Traffic, Access, and Communication
  • Provide traffic and parking control to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots.
  • Maintain contact with staff and administration regarding safety concerns and building operations.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students, personnel, and district operations.
  • Serve as a professional and visible presence on school grounds at all times.

Reporting and Documentation
  • Compose written incident reports regarding property damage, theft, unauthorized persons, unusual occurrences, and all incidents involving police, fire, or emergency medical services.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Travel between sites as necessary or assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Security or designee.

Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Experience or training in private security, law enforcement, or a related field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to acquire a working knowledge of district policies, procedures, and building security protocols.
  • Ability to organize tasks and work independently within established procedures.
  • Ability to interpret both simple and complex instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, supervisors, and visitors.
  • Ability to respond appropriately and calmly in emergency or high-stress situations.

Licenses & Certifications:
  • Valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License preferred.
  • Valid and current Connecticut Security Guard Card required, thus having fulfilled the requirements of
    CT PA 08-73.
  • CPR, First Aid, and Basic Life Support certification preferred.

Physical and Cognitive Demands:
Work in this classification is performed in a school environment and requires frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout buildings and grounds. The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, and use repetitive motions when operating equipment.
The employee may be required to walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and may lift, push, or move up to 50 pounds or more. The position requires the ability to hear clearly and determine the direction of sound in a noisy environment.
Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and include distance vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Adaptive technology may be utilized as appropriate. The position may involve stress related to emergency situations and interactions with students, staff, and the public.
