What is a private estate manager?

A Private Estate Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and staff of a private estate or large residential property. Their duties often include managing household staff, coordinating property maintenance, handling budgets and vendors, and ensuring the smooth running of the estate. Estate managers may also organize events, manage security, and act as the primary point of contact for the property owners. This role requires excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills, as well as discretion and attention to detail.

What does a private estate manager do?

As a private estate manager, your job is to oversee all aspects of a particular property. This includes ensuring regular upkeep and maintenance, hiring and training household staff, and ensuring the property is ready for an event at the owner's request. Many private estate managers help run the property as a business. This can involve arranging for tours, selecting locations for wedding ceremonies, or leasing out ballrooms or entire buildings for parties. Estate managers hold the highest authority on the property short of the owners themselves and often have broad discretion to handle staff and funds. Many private estate managers live on the estate itself or extremely close to the property. It is possible to manage a large estate remotely, but this is relatively rare.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a private estate manager?

To thrive as a Private Estate Manager, you need expertise in property management, budgeting, maintenance coordination, and often a relevant degree or hospitality background. Familiarity with property management software, smart home technology, and vendor management systems is typically required. Outstanding leadership, discretion, and communication skills help build trust with principals and ensure team effectiveness. These skills are vital to efficiently managing complex estates, upholding high service standards, and maintaining confidentiality for high-net-worth clients.

What are some common challenges a private estate manager faces, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Private Estate Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing the demands of property maintenance, managing a diverse staff, and handling last-minute requests from principals. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and adaptive problem-solving are key to addressing these issues. Building a reliable network of vendors and fostering a collaborative team environment can also help ensure smooth estate operations and client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop Deep Accounting Domain Expertise: Organize and share best practices related to corporate lease accounting processes; stay updated on lease accounting rules established by domestic and international financial accounting governing bodies; engage key customers, prospects, service partners, analysts, and industry subject matter experts to keep a pulse of lease accounting best practices and common needs and roadblocks; engage key internal teams such as Sales, Support, Implementation and Alliances to understand the impact of persistent lease accounting roadblocks and needs; document and share updated best practices internally and externally as needed.
  • Maintain Backlog: Capture, groom lease accounting backlog items and inform prioritization decisions; serve as the primary point of contact to collect and prioritize all feedback related to lease accounting functionality; capture and continuously update backlog details for all lease accountingโ€‘related items so they reflect relevant insights from stakeholders and market research; use analytics tools to track product performance and drive improvements; provide prioritization recommendations to Product Leadership to optimize business value, aligning customer demands, regulatory needs and company goals.
  • Design Releaseโ€‘Ready functionality: Design easyโ€‘toโ€‘use, effective and scalable lease accounting functionality to address market needs; document and share all technical requirements; collaborate with Product Designer to meet internal design requirements while addressing user needs; work with Product Leadership to approve designs and requirements aligned with business goals; partner with Engineering to ensure accurate execution and conduct functional testing for iterative improvements.
  • Quality Assurance & Acceptance Testing: Develop clear acceptance criteria and advise on testing plans; lead user acceptance testing (UAT) and work with QA teams to identify and resolve defects.
  • Ensure Adoption: Enable successful lease accounting product adoption; lead feature demos using realistic lease data; communicate technical requirements clearly to internal teams inโ€‘person or virtually; expose and address release risks; recommend implementation and training approaches and ensure materials capture technical details; work with Product Marketing to ensure GTM materials accurately capture functionality; gather feedback from internal stakeholders to determine customer acceptance and alignment; monitor and analyze adoption using user analytics (Pendo) and support cases postโ€‘release (Salesforce) to capture additional backlog items that address customer issues.
Basic Qualifications
  • A bachelorโ€™s degree is required from an accredited, notโ€‘forโ€‘profit, inโ€‘person university or college.
  • 5+ years of direct or indirect experience in accounting, lease accounting, financial reporting, or compliance roles.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Product Manager, Product Owner or Business Analyst.
  • Familiarity with financial reporting and disclosures, audit processes, and regulatory compliance requirements for public and private entities.
  • Comfortable working with engineering teams to effectively bridge the gap between technical needs and business needs.
  • Ability to translate complex functional requirements into clear, actionable tasks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to both business and technical audiences.
  • A track record of commitment to prior employers.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Product Manager, Product Owner, or Business Analyst experience in accounting, financial reporting, ERP, or financial software; lease accounting experience is a plus but not required โ€” candidates with adjacent domain expertise are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Masterโ€™s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field or CPA.
