Job description

The Certified Clinical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for independently performing qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests in assigned section(s) following established policies and procedures. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and/or results and uses knowledge, deductive skills, and judgment to troubleshoot and resolve them.

Essential Duties amp; Responsibilities:

  • Perform high complexity testing and analysis and be responsible for specimen processing, test performance and test reporting.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintenance of records.
  • Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens and adhere to laboratory’s quality control policies and document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and instrument maintenance.
  • Follow laboratory’s policies whenever test systems are not within established acceptable level of performance.
  • Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor.
  • Responsible for documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from laboratory’s established performance specification.
  • Participate in regular training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of testing performed including reading professional journals or other publications and/or attending webinars or conferences.
  • Maintains cleanliness of laboratory, cleaning spills with special attention to body fluid precautions and contaminated waste disposal per OSHA guidelines.
  • Assures the lab areas is clean and organized and is operated in a safe manner.
  • Notifying physicians of critical lab values immediately.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements:

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to stand for long periods of time, walk short distances, and lift up to 35 pounds) to perform the essential functions of the position. Also requires visual acuity, normal color perception, and full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, other employees, and the public.
  • Demonstrates proficient computer skills and knowledge of laboratory information systems and applications.
  • Requires ability to be effective in a fast paced, quality focused, multi-priority environment that frequently deals with stressful situations and deadlines.

Education amp; Experience:

  • 2+ years experience as a MLT/MLS
  • Bachelor or associate, degree in clinical laboratory science, micro-biology or relevant degree.
  • Required certification by the ASCP or AMT.
