What is a principal power engineer?

Principal Power Engineers are senior-level professionals who specialize in the design, analysis, and management of electrical power systems. They typically lead projects involving power generation, transmission, and distribution, ensuring systems are efficient, reliable, and compliant with regulations. In addition to technical responsibilities, they often mentor junior engineers, oversee complex problem-solving, and coordinate with stakeholders across various disciplines. Their expertise is crucial for the safe and effective delivery of electrical power in industries such as utilities, manufacturing, and infrastructure development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a principal power engineer?

To thrive as a Principal Power Engineer, you need advanced expertise in power systems engineering, electrical design, and project management, typically supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with power system analysis software such as ETAP, PSCAD, or SKM, along with familiarity with industry standards and grid codes, is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure the effective design, implementation, and oversight of complex power projects, maintaining safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by principal power engineers when leading multidisciplinary project teams?

Principal Power Engineers often lead projects that involve professionals from various disciplines such as mechanical, civil, and software engineering. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication and integration of all technical requirements, as each discipline may have different priorities and terminologies. Balancing project timelines, budget constraints, and regulatory compliance while aligning the team's efforts toward a unified goal requires strong leadership and organizational skills. Additionally, staying updated with evolving industry standards and emerging technologies is crucial to guiding the team effectively.

Job description

Senior Principal Power Engineer
Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) builds the products that power infrastructure, solutions, and data management our customers need most. Our teams design and develop the hardware and software that connect infrastructure, accelerate computational workloads, integrate across the stack, protect data continuity, and deliver the platforms, applications, and diagnostics our customers rely on every day at enterprise scale.
Some product builders follow the rules. Ours rewrite them.
Within ISG, innovation isn't just about creating new technology- it's about challenging assumptions and reimagining how work gets done. Engineers define intent, author precise specifications, and orchestrate AI agents that execute at speed and scale. AI is embedded throughout our development process, helping us move faster, learn quicker, and deliver greater impact. Yet the most important contribution remains uniquely human: deciding what to build, designing how it should work, and applying the judgment needed to earn our customers' trust. When your products power critical infrastructure around the world, that responsibility matters.
We move quickly toward the work that matters most. We reward experimentation, encourage bold thinking, and remove unnecessary barriers so great ideas can become reality faster. Our teams embrace a customer-first, first-to-market mindset, transforming rapid feedback into better products and better outcomes. We aren't looking for people who are content with the status quo- we look for builders who question it, improve it, and occasionally rewrite it.
If you're energized by solving complex systems challenges, excited to work alongside AI to amplify your impact, and motivated by the opportunity to shape what's next instead of simply maintaining what's been done before, you'll find your place here.
Join us and help build the future of enterprise technology.
Our Electrical Engineering team puts the spark into the full hardware development lifecycle, from concept to production. It takes experts in system architecture definition, design, analysis, prototyping, sourcing & the debugging and validation of layouts or routes to deliver state-of-the-art products for a changing world. We work closely with designers, cross-functional teams within Dell Technologies and suppliers to make sure electronic designs meet a range of requirements, including schedule, feature set, functionality, and quality, as well as industry standards.
What you'll achieve:
As a Senior Principal Power Engineer, you will serve as a technical leader and Subject Matter Expert for power technologies supporting Dell ISG platforms. You will drive power solution development, influence power architecture and technology direction, and provide technical leadership across cross-functional teams, suppliers, and technology partners. You will work closely with platform, architecture, and engineering teams to deliver innovative, reliable, and efficient power solutions that meet current and future business needs.
Join us to do the best work of your career and make a profound social impact as a Senior Principal Power Engineer on our Power Engineering team in Round Rock, Texas
Responsibilities
You will:
  • Lead power solution development to support system and platform requirements from concept through production
  • Engage with technology partners and suppliers to evaluate emerging technologies, industry trends, and innovative power solutions
  • Collaborate with architecture and platform teams on power feature definition, technology evaluation, and future roadmap planning

Qualifications
Take the first step towards your dream career
Every Dell Technologies team member brings something unique to the table. Here's what we are looking for with this role:
Essential Requirements
  • Strong knowledge of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, particularly in analog and digital circuitry design for power applications. Experience with CAD and simulation tools such as MATLAB, SPICE, and Allegro is a plus
  • Deep understanding of power topologies, power conversion technologies, component applications, and power management architectures. Additional focus on data center power infrastructure and system level power distribution considerations.
  • Experience developing and validating power solutions for enterprise, server, infrastructure, or high-performance computing systems
  • Proficiency in analog and digital system design for signal processing and feedback control. Familiarity with scripting languages like C/C++, Assembly, Python, LabVIEW, and/or Linux programming will be positive
  • Excellent communication, presentation , analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to provide technical oversight for AC/DC and DC/DC development teams either at Dell or ODMs

Desirable Requirements
  • Experience with power supply units (PSU), battery backup systems (BBU), power distribution, or related power technologies
  • Experience supporting AI, enterprise, server, or data center infrastructure products

Compensation
Dell is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this position is $164,000 to $225,500
