Principal Hardware Architect information

What does a Principal Hardware Architect do?

A Principal Hardware Architect is responsible for designing and overseeing the development of complex hardware systems and components, such as CPUs, GPUs, or entire electronic devices. They lead the architectural planning, set technical direction, and ensure that hardware solutions meet performance, cost, and scalability goals. This role often involves collaborating with engineers, software teams, and other stakeholders to define system requirements and solve technical challenges. Principal Hardware Architects also play a key role in making high-level design decisions and mentoring junior engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Principal Hardware Architect?

To thrive as a Principal Hardware Architect, you need advanced expertise in hardware design, system architecture, and electronic engineering, typically backed by a relevant degree and extensive industry experience. Proficiency with hardware description languages (such as VHDL or Verilog), EDA tools, and familiarity with industry standards is essential, along with certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) being advantageous. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help you guide teams and articulate complex technical concepts to stakeholders. These skills ensure innovative, reliable hardware solutions are developed efficiently and aligned with organizational goals.

What are some typical challenges Principal Hardware Architects face when leading cross-functional hardware development teams?

Principal Hardware Architects often navigate the complexities of aligning diverse technical disciplines, such as electrical engineering, firmware, and mechanical design, toward a unified product vision. A common challenge is ensuring effective communication and collaboration among teams with differing priorities and technical languages. Additionally, they must balance long-term architectural goals with short-term project deadlines, all while managing trade-offs between performance, cost, and manufacturability. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong leadership, negotiation skills, and a deep technical understanding across multiple domains.

What is the difference between Principal Hardware Architect vs Hardware Design Engineer?

AspectPrincipal Hardware ArchitectHardware Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, extensive experienceBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentLeadership roles, strategic planning, cross-team collaborationDesign, development, testing of hardware components
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, hardware manufacturers, R&D divisionsElectronics companies, OEMs, hardware startups

The Principal Hardware Architect focuses on high-level hardware system design, architecture, and strategic planning, often leading teams and making critical technical decisions. In contrast, the Hardware Design Engineer concentrates on the detailed design, development, and testing of specific hardware components. Both roles require strong technical skills, but the architect role emphasizes leadership and system-level thinking, while the engineer role is more hands-on with hardware development.

About SiTime

SiTime is the Precision Timing company.

Timing is the heartbeat of all electronics, ensuring performance, resilience and scalability. For decades, quartz devices, non-silicon technology, have kept systems in sync, but they struggle in harsher, more demanding environments. MEMS-based Precision Timing delivers greater accuracy, smaller size and resilience. Today, MEMS timing powers over 400 applications, including high-growth ones in AI datacenters, automated driving, industrial and humanoid robots, wearables and IoT.

Our semiconductor MEMS programmable solutions offer a rich feature set that enables customers to differentiate their products with higher performance, smaller size, lower power, and better reliability. With more than 4 billion devices shipped, SiTime is changing the timing industry. For more information, visit: www.sitime.com.

Job Summary

The Principal Hardware Signal Integrity/Power Integrity Architect is accountable for system-level electrical design and for establishing signal and power integrity simulation methodologies that underpin the development of hardware platforms used for validation, testing, and high-volume production of MEMS timing products. This role leverages advanced expertise in signal integrity and PCB design to deliver solutions that ensure optimal system performance. Responsibilities include collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to simulate and engineer complex platforms with robust electrical integrity. Furthermore, the role encompasses activities aimed at assuring product quality and reliability through comprehensive testing processes

Responsibilities:

  • Lead signal integrity (SI) design initiatives for system platforms supporting advanced SiTime timing products across diverse business units and applications
  • Establish comprehensive methodologies for both signal and power integrity across a variety of hardware platforms, including validation environments, probing stations, load boards, and production test systems
  • Identify, assess, and integrate new technologies, components, and techniques to enhance overall signal and power integrity performance
  • Deliver robust and cost-effective signal integrity solutions by conducting detailed analysis, simulations, experimental design, and verification utilizing advanced tools and methodologies
  • Collaborate closely with circuit design, packaging, board design, and product teams to define reliable system components at all levels, including package, sockets, connectors, and board architecture
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, first-pass-success hardware infrastructure through expert root cause analysis and resolution, with an emphasis on addressing signal and power integrity challenges

Qualifications & Requirements (Education must be included):

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • Over 10 years of expertise in hardware system design, including comprehensive signal integrity analysis and optimization. Leadership role is a plus
  • Demonstrated proficiency in PCB design tools such as Altium, Allegro, and APD, with a strong capability for conducting thorough PCB reviews
  • In-depth knowledge of server technologies, including:
  • Signal and power integrity design and optimization methodologies
  • Thermal management strategies
  • Mechanical considerations relevant to PCB and overall system design
  • Experience in high-speed interface design, e.g., DDR, PCIe, USB, and similar protocols
  • Strong background in transmission line and electromagnetic field theory, with expertise in time and frequency domain analysis
  • Skilled in extracting S-parameters or lumped models from packages and PCBs, converting them to Spice/behavioral circuit models, and evaluating performance through simulation
  • Experienced with MIPI, I2C, SPI, and UART interfaces
  • Proficient in impedance-controlled board design and manufacturing
  • Conduct laboratory measurements using oscilloscope, phase noise analyzer, VNA, and TDR

Desired Characteristics & Attributes:

  • Demonstrates a strong sense of self-motivation and a commitment to achieving meaningful results
  • Exhibits the ability and enthusiasm to contribute effectively within a collaborative, fast-paced team environment
