What are Pricing Engineers?

Pricing Engineers are professionals who analyze market trends, cost data, and customer demand to develop optimal pricing strategies for products or services. They use mathematical models, statistical analysis, and software tools to ensure prices are competitive while maximizing profitability. Pricing Engineers often collaborate with sales, marketing, and finance teams to align pricing strategies with business goals. Their work is essential in industries where pricing can significantly impact market share and revenue.

How does a Pricing Engineer typically collaborate with sales and product teams to develop effective pricing strategies?

Pricing Engineers work closely with both sales and product teams to gather market insights, understand customer needs, and analyze competitive positioning. They often participate in cross-functional meetings to align pricing models with product features and value propositions, ensuring that prices are both competitive and profitable. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pricing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pricing Engineer, you need strong analytical abilities, a background in mathematics or engineering, and experience with pricing strategies, often supported by a degree in engineering, finance, or a related field. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you collaborate with sales, finance, and product teams. These skills are essential for developing data-driven pricing models that optimize profitability and competitiveness in dynamic markets.

Job Description Summary:

This role is built for someone with strong analytical horsepower and high curiosity.

You may come from engineering, mathematics, statistics, or a quantitative field. What matters is your ability to break down complex problems, work with data at a deep level, and apply mathematical reasoning to real business decisions.

You will support both day-to-day pricing execution and, over time, contribute to more strategic initiatives: identifying patterns, solving problems, and helping shape pricing decisions across the business.

You will work in a fast-paced environment with real deadlines and high expectations. There is no micromanagement here. Output and ownership matter.

Critical Job Functions:

  • Execute pricing work with speed and accuracy
    • Analyze customer and market data to develop pricing recommendations
    • Support bids for direct customers and 3PLs, balancing yield and network capacity
    • Build and maintain pricing models using Excel and internal systems
  • Manage daily workflow independently
    • Process incoming pricing requests from Sales through internal systems
    • Ensure accuracy, speed, and consistency across deliverables
    • Manage multiple priorities and deadlines without constant oversight
  • Solve problems and identify gaps
    • Recognize data inconsistencies, investigate and identify root causes
    • Apply logical and statistical reasoning to support pricing decisions
    • Propose solutions and recommendations
  • Support pricing decisions
    • Support pricing initiatives and projects that impact margin and growth
    • Identify trends in customer behavior, pricing performance, and market shifts
    • Help improve tools, processes, and pricing logic
  • Collaborate cross-functionally
    • Partner with Sales, Operations, and leadership to align pricing decisions
    • Participate in customer discussions when needed, supporting pricing insights

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Analytics, or a related field
  • Strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, or quantitative analysis
  • 3+ years of experience in analytics, engineering, or data-focused roles
  • Ability to work with large datasets, identify patterns, and build logical models
  • Experience applying quantitative reasoning to real-world problems
  • Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, advanced formulas required)
  • Exposure to SQL (ability to write queries preferred)
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Access or similar tools is a plus
  • Exposure to Python, R, or other programming languages is a plus
  • Exposure to AI, machine learning, or data experimentation is a strong plus.

More important than tools:

  • Strong problem-solving ability and analytical thinking
  • High curiosity and willingness to learn quickly
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines
  • Clear communication: can explain the "why" behind the numbers
  • Work ethic: you take ownership and follow through

Core Competencies

  • Analytical thinking
  • Problem solving and pattern recognition
  • Ownership and accountability
  • Learning agility
  • Data interpretation and storytelling
  • Attention to detail
  • Cross-functional collaboration
  • This role requires strong quantitative thinking. If your experience is primarily executing tasks without deeply understanding the data behind them, this role will not be a fit.
