What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Precast Concrete Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Precast Concrete Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, proficiency in structural analysis, and a relevant engineering degree or licensure. Familiarity with CAD software, BIM systems, and specialized precast design tools such as Tekla Structures is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help engineers coordinate with architects, contractors, and production teams. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective design and installation of precast concrete structures.

What are some common challenges faced by Precast Concrete Engineers when coordinating with construction teams on site?

Precast Concrete Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring the timely delivery and precise installation of precast components, as construction schedules can be tight and sequencing is critical. Effective communication with site supervisors and installation crews is crucial to address any discrepancies between design and field conditions, such as unexpected site variations or crane access limitations. Proactively coordinating logistics, understanding the construction team's workflow, and being responsive to on-site queries help minimize delays and ensure structural integrity. This collaborative approach is essential for maintaining project timelines and quality standards.

What is the difference between Precast Concrete Engineering vs Structural Drafting?

AspectPrecast Concrete EngineeringStructural Drafting
CredentialsEngineering degree, PE license often preferredDrafting certification or diploma, CAD proficiency
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, construction sites, manufacturing plantsDesign offices, architectural firms, engineering consultancies
Industry UsageDesign and plan precast concrete components for constructionPrepare detailed drawings for various structural elements

Precast Concrete Engineering focuses on designing precast concrete elements, requiring engineering credentials and working closely with construction teams. Structural Drafting involves creating detailed drawings for structural components, emphasizing CAD skills. While both roles collaborate in construction projects, Precast Concrete Engineers develop the design concepts, whereas Structural Drafters produce the technical drawings needed for fabrication and installation.

What is precast concrete engineering?

Precast concrete engineering involves the design, analysis, and production of concrete components that are cast and cured in a controlled factory environment before being transported to and assembled at a construction site. Precast engineers work on elements like beams, columns, wall panels, and stairs, ensuring they meet structural requirements and fit the project specifications. This method offers benefits such as improved quality control, faster construction times, and reduced on-site labor. Precast concrete engineering is widely used in commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager

An established industrial contractor with more than 70 years of experience is seeking a Precast Design Engineer to support complex construction projects nationwide. The organization specializes in turnkey construction solutions, including specialized precast concrete manufacturing and design-build services, and is widely recognized as a go-to contractor for high-grade epoxy intumescent and concrete fireproofing, primarily serving the petrochemical industry.

This role is ideal for an experienced engineer or engineering designer who enjoys transforming structural concepts into accurate 3D models, shop drawings, and production-ready deliverables while working closely with engineering, manufacturing, and field teams.

Essential Functions

  • Perform structural design support and analysis of prestressed and precast concrete elements, including beams, columns, wall panels, piles, and related systems
  • Develop detailed 3D models and shop drawings for precast concrete systems, cast-in-place foundations, and miscellaneous structural components using industry-standard CAD and modeling software
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, shop drawings, erection drawings, and Bills of Materials to ensure accuracy, constructability, and alignment with design intent
  • Read and interpret structural, architectural, and MEP drawings to develop coordinated and buildable precast solutions
  • Coordinate with engineers, detailers, production teams, and field personnel to ensure alignment between design intent, fabrication requirements, and erection sequencing
  • Review and respond to RFIs, submittals, and design revisions throughout the project lifecycle
  • Ensure all models and drawings comply with applicable codes and standards, including IBC, ACI, and PCI requirements
  • Perform quality control checks on models and drawings to ensure compliance with company standards and industry best practices
  • Support optimization and value engineering efforts to improve efficiency, constructability, and cost effectiveness of precast systems
  • Provide technical support during fabrication and field erection, including troubleshooting design or constructability issues
  • Mentor and support detailing personnel to ensure alignment with engineering design intent and continued development of team capabilities

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills for Success

  • Strong understanding of precast and prestressed concrete systems, including load paths, connections, and constructability considerations
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and detailing software such as Tekla Structures, Revit, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar platforms
  • Solid understanding of precast production processes, erection methods, and coordination with field operations
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings and translate engineering requirements into accurate fabrication-ready models and drawings
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy and quality
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate across engineering, production, and field teams
  • Practical solution-oriented mindset with a focus on constructability and efficiency

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent industry experience
  • 5+ years of experience in precast prestressed concrete design, modeling, and/or detailing
  • Strong hands-on experience with 3D modeling and shop drawing development
  • Experience in construction, industrial, or heavy structural environments preferred
  • Professional Engineer PE license preferred, but not required
