Job description

Forward Deployed Engineer

Nashville, TN (or Charlotte, NC)

About Kanbrick

Kanbrick is a purpose-driven, long-term investment partnership built to empower people and organizations to reach their full potential. We partner with family- and founder-owned businesses that have strong moats and untapped potential, helping them grow through a hands-on focus on people, culture, and operating systems. We think in decades, not quarters - and as seasoned operators and true partners, we roll up our sleeves to build enduring companies, brick by brick.

Role Overview

Kanbrick is building an AI and technology enablement capability across the firm and our partner companies. This role will work across two surfaces: internally, building the AI tooling, skills ecosystem, and automation infrastructure that makes the Kanbrick team more productive; and externally, embedding with partner company teams to map their highest-value workflows, deploy agent-driven automation, and coach them through adoption. What you build in the first year becomes the template for how AI operations works across the entire family of Kanbrick companies.

This role reports to the VP of Technology and AI and is a member of the Kanbrick Business System (KBS) operating team. This role can be based in Nashville, TN or Charlotte, NC.

Key Responsibilities

Building & Deploying Specialist Tools

Guide leaders at Kanbrick and our operating companies through AI-Native tool development and help them “go the final mile.” That means: embedding a tool directly into a partner company's day-to-day workflow and supporting adoption, turning a promising prototype into a formal, structured, repeatable asset that scales across our companies and serving as a technical partner to Kanbrick and our operating companies. You'll map data flows across business systems, connect existing platforms (CRMs, ERPs, financial tools) via MCP servers and APIs, deploy agents into production with clear human-in-the-loop interfaces, and manage them on an ongoing basis - tracking KPIs, running evals after model or data changes, and iterating on performance.

AI Tooling & Skills Ecosystem

Make Kanbrick and our operating companies more productive. Formalize and hone Kanbrick's Skills library, accelerate the use of “AI coworking tools”, and build toward a full KBS plug-in suite - a set of tools every operator across our businesses reaches for by default. Own the build and curation of the internal AI-enabled projects, tools, and skills repository; turn ad hoc experiments into repeatable, version-controlled, distributable assets; and maintain a partner-facing skills library with documentation that lets teams browse, install, and use tools independently.

Drive Enterprise Software Development

Beyond skills repositories and AI enablement tooling, a handful of workflows will warrant graduation into “Enterprise-Level” software - durable, production-grade systems that scale across Kanbrick and our operating companies. You'll take end-to-end ownership of these builds: pressure-testing which problems justify enterprise investment, scoping architecture and data models, partnering with internal stakeholders and outside engineering resources where needed, and shepherding the system from prototype through deployment, adoption, and ongoing operation.

WhatWe’reLooking For
  • Abuilder instinct andabias toward actionand a passion for software engineering, emergingtechnologiesandAI-driven technical acceleration
  • Autonomous and self-directed; you build working versions before waiting for detailed specs
  • Hands-on experience in a technology or technology consulting environment, gained through internships or early career roles.
  • Hands-on experience building with modern AI tooling-LLMs, agents, prompt engineering, MCP servers, skills, and CLI-based workflows-in production orexperimental settings
  • Proficiencyin Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, or both, with comfort in Git, cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), and API integrations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills-comfortable presenting toleadersand writing documentation in equal measure
  • Comfort with breadth over depth-this role spans workflow design, agent deployment, system integration, training, and documentation
  • Alignment withKanbrick’smission, values, and long-term builder mindset
  • KBS is asmall team ofhands-onoperators. You work directly with people who have run businesses and built real thingson the ground floor of creating a new function.
  • 7–8 operating companies (and growing) across multiple industries to work in.You'llwork across a wider range of business problemsthan a traditional software engineering role.
  • A long-term platform, not a fund cycle.Kanbrickis built forthe long run, and this role is meant to grow withthe firm.
  • Youhave a strong voice indefininghow AI operationsworkacross the portfolio. You’llbe a key part in the development of thestrategy, notmaintainingsomeone else's stack.
  • Competitive salary and benefits.

AtKanbrick, you will work alongside leaders who are building enduring businesses in an environment that is collaborative, hands-on, andmission-driven. You will be an integral part of defining how AI and technology accelerate value creation across the firm and our partner companies. If you are passionate about AI, thrive on solving real operational problems, and want to build something new from the ground up, we want to hear from you.
