Job Summary

The Field Engineer (FE) supports the successful execution of utility construction projects by conducting precise site surveys, verifying installed utilities, and ensuring quality standards are met. Working closely with project management and field teams, the FE is responsible for drafting accurate as-built drawings, tracking daily production, and supporting quality control efforts. This role demands technical aptitude for effective use of survey equipment, strong attention to detail, and the ability to coordinate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and priorities on active construction sites to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery of required information.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Conduct precise field surveys of utilities and structures using GPS, total station, and data collection tools.
  • Draft and update detailed as-built drawings (plan and profile views), verifying conformance with current drawings; escalate discrepancies promptly.
  • Perform routine inspections to ensure materials, installation, and workmanship meet project and quality standards; document deficiencies and support corrective actions.
  • Track daily construction activities (trenching, conduit/pipe installation, backfilling, proofing) and compare progress against goals.
  • Provide daily production reports, identify deviations, and assist in schedule adjustments for efficiency.
  • Coordinate daily with field teams and supervision to verify conditions and resolve issues.
  • Conduct quality and safety inspections, document findings, and notify teams of deficiencies.
  • Identify potential field issues early and work with project team to resolve them quickly.
  • Maintains current field documentation, redlines, and updates; distribute promptly.
  • Prepare end-of-day reports summarizing progress, issues, and schedule status.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management/Surveying/related field or equivalent field experience. (Candidates enrolled in a relevant degree program are also encouraged to apply.)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and other relevant CAD/drafting tools.
  • Experience with survey equipment including GPS, total station, and data collectors.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills; ability to collaborate with field teams, project teams, and clients.
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and reporting skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work outdoors and on active construction sites under various conditions.
  • Highly organized, capable of multitasking and adaptable to changing priorities and assignments.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed to multiple job sites.
  • 2+ years of experience in utility construction, field engineering, or surveying with experience on design-build and mission-critical infrastructure projects being a significant plus.
  • Understanding of utility construction methods, trenching operations, duct bank installation, encasement, and verification techniques.
  • Familiarity with third-party QA/QC processes, inspection procedures, and client review tasks.
