Job description


Basic Purpose
Directs and coordinates the engineering and design activities associated with transmission line and the civil/structural aspects of substation design. Oversees the activities of a staff of engineers and design technicians. Responsible for the overall quality of the engineering and design work, for compliance with applicable standards and for meeting schedules and customer expectations.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Oversees the work product of a staff of engineers and design technicians.
  • Leads all aspects of underground and overhead transmission line design work, including estimates, routing/siting, calculations and studies, structural design and preparation of design drawings and turnover packages.
  • Leads all aspects of civil design work associated with substation projects, including drainage studies, estimates, grading/site preparation, structural design fencing/block wall and preparation of detailed design drawings.
  • Leads efforts to develop and improve design criteria and design standards.

Represents the Transmission and Civil Engineering department at public and customer meetings.
Accountable for the design of capital projects valued at approximately $25M to $50M per year.
Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes and regulations applicable to position and company.
Monitors and enforces all compliance requirements for area of responsibility.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Essential Education, Skills, and Environment
Education and Work Experience
Bachelor of Science in Engineering required. Professional Engineering License and 8 - 15 years' minimum experience in an electric utility environment preferred.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
Familiarity with the National Electric Safety Code. Knowledge of transmission line design and construction practices, and structural and Civil engineering as applied to electrical substations.
Equipment and Applications
Familiarity with PLS-CADD, structural and civil design software, and word processing and spreadsheet software.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
Ability to perform field visits to projects/jobsites, some domestic travel required (factory visits/customer meetings).
