As of Jun 11, 2026, the average hourly pay for precision machining technology in the United States is $22.23, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $24.76 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is precision machining a good job?

Precision machining is a skilled trade that involves operating and maintaining CNC machines and other tools to produce precise metal parts. It offers steady employment opportunities, competitive wages, and requires technical skills and certifications, making it a viable career choice for those interested in manufacturing and engineering. Job prospects are generally stable due to ongoing demand in industries like aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Precision Machining Technology, and why are they important?

To thrive in Precision Machining Technology, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a background in mathematics and blueprint reading, often supported by a technical diploma or associate degree. Proficiency with CNC machines, CAD/CAM software, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications like NIMS are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication, and teamwork set individuals apart in this field. These skills ensure precise production, efficient workflow, and adherence to safety and quality standards in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Precision Machining Technology, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Precision Machining Technology often face challenges such as maintaining tight tolerances, adapting to evolving technology, and troubleshooting equipment issues. Staying current with the latest CNC software and machinery is essential, as is developing strong problem-solving skills to address unexpected production setbacks. Collaboration with engineers and quality control teams is common, so effective communication is key to ensuring product specifications are met. Continuous training and hands-on experience can help overcome these challenges and support career advancement.

Can a CNC machinist make 100k a year?

CNC machinists can potentially earn $100,000 annually with advanced skills, experience, and working in high-demand industries or locations. Achieving this salary often requires proficiency with complex machinery, certifications, overtime, or supervisory roles. Entry-level positions typically pay less, but experienced CNC machinists in specialized fields can reach or exceed this income level.

What is the difference between Precision Machining Technology vs CNC Machinist?

AspectPrecision Machining TechnologyCNC Machinist
CredentialsTechnical certifications, machining coursesTechnical certifications, CNC programming courses
Work EnvironmentManufacturing shops, machine shopsManufacturing shops, machine shops
Industry UsageDesign, setup, and operate precision machinesOperate CNC machines to produce parts

Precision Machining Technology involves designing and setting up machines for high-accuracy manufacturing, while CNC Machinists focus on operating CNC equipment to produce parts. Both roles require technical skills and certifications, often working in similar environments within manufacturing industries. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in precision manufacturing.

Is AI taking over machinist jobs?

AI and automation are increasingly used in precision machining to improve efficiency and precision, but they complement rather than replace skilled machinists. Machinists are needed to program, operate, and maintain advanced CNC machines and interpret complex designs, making human expertise essential in the industry.

What is the highest paying machining job?

In precision machining technology, the highest paying roles are often CNC programming managers, toolroom managers, or specialized aerospace machinists, with salaries exceeding $70,000 to $100,000 annually. These positions typically require advanced skills, certifications, and experience operating complex CNC equipment and overseeing production processes.

What is Precision Machining Technology?

Precision Machining Technology involves using specialized machines, tools, and processes to manufacture parts and components with very tight tolerances and high levels of accuracy. Professionals in this field work with materials like metal and plastic to create products for industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical devices. They often operate CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, read technical blueprints, and ensure quality through precise measurement techniques. This field requires strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and knowledge of advanced manufacturing technologies.
