These programs help individuals gain the qualifications needed to successfully apply for and succeed in an apprenticeship, increasing their chances of long-term career success.

Is 25 too late to start an apprenticeship?

Pre apprenticeships and other apprenticeship programs typically have minimum age requirements, often starting at 16 or 18, but there is generally no upper age limit. Starting at 25 is not too late, and many employers value maturity and life experience in apprentices. Age should not be a barrier to gaining skills and advancing in a trade or profession.

It often includes classroom instruction, hands-on experience, and may lead to a formal apprenticeship or certification. These programs help job seekers develop relevant skills and improve their chances of securing an apprenticeship position.

It aims to encourage participation and retention in skilled trades training, often provided by employers or training programs as part of workforce development initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pre Apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pre Apprentice, you need basic math and literacy skills, a high school diploma or equivalent, and a strong interest in learning a skilled trade. Familiarity with hand tools, safety protocols, and sometimes OSHA-10 certification are often required or beneficial. A positive attitude, eagerness to learn, reliability, and good communication help set you apart in this entry-level role. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure safety, effective on-the-job training, and a successful transition into a full apprenticeship.

What does a pre-apprentice mean?

A pre-apprentice is an individual who is beginning to gain basic skills and knowledge in a trade before entering a formal apprenticeship program. It often involves introductory training, safety education, and skill development to prepare for more advanced work and certification requirements.

What typical responsibilities can I expect as a Pre Apprentice, and how do these tasks help prepare me for an apprenticeship?

As a Pre Apprentice, your daily responsibilities often include assisting experienced tradespeople, organizing tools and materials, performing basic hands-on tasks under supervision, and learning about workplace safety protocols. These duties are designed to familiarize you with the work environment, industry standards, and essential skills required for a full apprenticeship. By taking on these foundational tasks, you'll gain practical experience, build confidence, and better understand the expectations and workflow of your chosen trade, making you a strong candidate for advancement into a formal apprenticeship program.

Job description

โ†’Don's Garage Doors is an affiliate company of A1 Garage Door in Phoenix, Arizona. In Denver, Colorado, we operate under the brand name Don's Garage.
I'm Tommy, and I'm the CEO of A1 Garage Door. I'm glad you're here.
I started the company in 2007, and we have since grown to cover almost half the United States. Our vision is to become America's largest and most trusted garage door company.
We are looking for high performers to join us. The Installer job is physically demanding. Stamina and enthusiasm are required!
You don't need to have experience with garage doors. Our team will train you on everything you need to know (including the customer experience, the key to our success), so you can thrive in your very own market.
You Should Apply If:
  • You love to learn as much as you love to win
  • You're a master of organization. You work methodically and cleanly
  • You like to help people and you take pride from a job well done
  • Your peers describe you as handy, reliable, and trustworthy
  • You move fast, you're always busy, and no task is too small or too big
  • You're self-motivated and enjoy working autonomously
  • You should DEFINITELY apply if you have worked in similar industries, performing installation or assembly. (Windows & doors, flooring, carpentry, kitchen installation, furniture/fixtures/bike assembly etc.)

You Shouldn't Apply If:
  • You prefer working where there are no customers to talk to
  • You think that manual labor is for other people
  • You're not weather resistant (hot/cold depending on geography)
  • You're not likely to follow what you were taught in class and apply it with gusto

The Job:
  • Install new garage doors for residential customers
  • Remove existing door and mechanical parts
  • Replace worn or broken door parts using tools
  • Assemble mechanical parts
  • Install springs, sections, slats, and hardware
  • Run wiring to connect equipment
  • Lubricate and test mechanical parts for proper functioning
  • Educate customers on upgraded parts and services and ensure satisfaction
  • Document activities related to installations

Basic Requirements:
  • Be nice! I know, we shouldn't have to say that, but we mean it
  • Able to bend, climb, kneel and stand for long periods
  • Physically able to lift 75lbs, lift garage door panels above head
  • Able to stand on ladder
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools (Power drill, hammer, saw etc.)
  • Valid driver's license for at least 3 years with a clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test (not including THC) and criminal background check
  • Knowledge of basic software such as navigation apps, Google etc. as well as tablet and computer use
  • GED or HS diploma not required, however reading skills as well as basic math skills (measurements, payments) are required
  • Professional & approachable appearance
  • Employment requires current eligibility to legally work in the United States

The Journey of an Installer:
  • Our apprenticeship is a 4 week training program at the A1 Training Academy in Phoenix, AZ.
  • A1 covers flights and accommodations for the duration of your training in Phoenix. (All apprenticeship/training weeks are paid at an hourly rate of $20/hour. You will typically work 45-50 hours a week while an apprentice, and qualify for overtime for hours over 40 in a week, so should average $1,000 a week or more.)
  • Once you complete training, you will receive a $1,000 bonus, and graduate to a junior installer. You will perform your duties in and around your market. Boom!

Pay, benefits, other cool stuff:
  • Get your very own A1 wrapped van or truck with a gas card.
  • Tools provided!
  • Steady job flow to keep you busy
  • Medical, dental, vision, 401K
  • Starting pay $36.75/hour (Piece Rate) + commission on additional sales/services
  • Weekly pay
  • $1,000 bonus at completion of Training Academy in Phoenix (in addition to weekly pay)

Interview Process:
Our interview process is not long, but it's thorough. We want to make sure that each person who joins the team is the right fit for A1. And that we are the right fit for you!
  1. After we review your application, you will be contacted for an interview with a recruiter if we want to know more. Plan on up to 45 minutes.
  1. Next step is an interview with the Area manager. Plan on approximately 30 minutes.
  1. Next step is when the fun begins: you will be invited to ride along with one of our technicians so you can see what life at A1 is really like. Plan on ยฝ day.
