Position Summary

Practice of Peace Foundation (“POP” or “the Organization”) is a New York City-based nonprofit

corporation operating shelter sites and a community resource room across the Bronx and Queens in

service of individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The Organization integrates transitional

housing with mental health services delivered through the principles of the Health Realization Approach.

The Porter is responsible for the cleaning, sanitation, and general upkeep of the Freeman Residence

Shelter to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for residents and staff, performing daily

custodial duties and supporting facility operations.

This position operates within a DHS-funded shelter environment and is governed by applicable DHS and

OTDA facility standards, the New York City Health Code, OSHA requirements, and all other applicable laws

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are essential functions of the position within the meaning of the Americans with

Disabilities Act (ADA) and the New York State and New York City Human Rights Laws. Reasonable

accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform these essential

functions, except where doing so would impose an undue hardship on the Organization. The list below is

representative and is not intended to be exhaustive.

Cleaning & Sanitation

• Clean, sanitize, and disinfect common areas, hallways, restrooms, stairwells, and entrances on a

scheduled basis.

• Remove trash and recycling and maintain waste-disposal and recycling areas in compliance with

sanitation rules.

• Mop, sweep, vacuum, dust, and maintain floors, windows, and surfaces throughout the facility.

Support & Reporting

• Assist with moving furniture, supplies, and equipment and with room turnovers and set-ups.

• Restock restroom and cleaning supplies and maintain custodial closets and equipment.

• Safely use and store cleaning chemicals and equipment in accordance with safety guidelines.

• Report maintenance issues, safety hazards, and supply needs to the Facility Manager, and support

facility emergencies and safety drills.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Facility Manager.


Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must satisfy the qualifications set forth below. POP reserves the right to determine, in its sole

discretion, whether a candidate’s education, credentials, and experience satisfy the requirements of this

position.

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

• Prior custodial, cleaning, or building-services experience preferred.

• Knowledge of cleaning methods, supplies, and the safe handling of chemicals.

Skills & Competencies

• Reliable, dependable, and able to perform physical tasks throughout a shift.

• Attention to detail and the ability to follow cleaning schedules and instructions.

• Ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, as required.
