Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is the state’s largest hunger relief organization and one of the leading food banks in the Feeding America Network. In additional to vital hunger relief programs in our 21-county service area, we also operate Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative for Feeding America, serve as a contract reclamation site for Kroger Central Division, and are a staging site for FEMA disaster response.

Position Purpose of PPC Lead: The PPC Line Lead is responsible for the safe and effective packaging of bulk foods (primarily poultry, beef, and pork). This work is primarily done in refrigerated and frozen areas of the warehouse. The PPC line lead is responsible for adhering to all food safety regulations, ensuring the efficient production of finished packages, and making sure production deadlines are kept. A strong attention to detail is critical as the PPC line lead is responsible for checking the quality of all products, both inputs and finished. All responsibilities and duties will further Gleaners’ mission to be a leader in the fight against hunger.

Essential Functions of PPC Lead:

  • Primary Functions will be to help guide and assist all Protein Processing Center (PPC) staff in daily functions.
    1. Ability to perform, train, and fill in for each position in the PPC as needed.
    2. Work with supervisors to coordinate tasks for the PPC.
    3. Operate machinery such as but not limited to labeler, scale, thermoformer, wrapper, conveyors, and pallet dumper.
    4. Ensure the smooth, efficient, and sanitary operation of the PPC repackaging program, including training and quality control.
  • Lead the production team in repackaging temperature-controlled products. This will involve leading staff to pack boxes, picking products to be packed, recording finished cases, trash, and doing constant quality checks.
  • Guide and assist the team in cleaning and sanitation of PPC room and equipment.
  • Monitoring production process, verification, and documentation as needed.
  • Assist in track attendance of the PPC production team.
  • Motivate staff to be an effective part of the Gleaners team working together to achieve the organization’s goals.
  • Conducts Pre-Operational duties including ATP testing and micro swabbing.
  • Perform various warehouse functions including product receipt, put-away, replenishment, order-fulfillment, box production, and cycle count.
  • Work safely and accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Change tasks and assignments as the needs of our operations dictate.
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to all food safety guidelines according to GFB, Feeding America, AIB, USDA, ISDH and any other applicable processes or regulations for safe and sanitary production and storage of all products.
  • Operate PIT equipment according to Gleaners and OSHA guidelines.
  • Active participant of HACCP team to ensure food safety of the process and product.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience of PPC Lead:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Bilingual desired (Spanish/English)
  • Previous experience and/or training in supervision or team lead level desired
  • Knowledge and experience performing food production or warehouse functions.

Other Relevant Skills and Abilities of the PPC Lead:

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication skills
  • Ability to read, write and to understand instructions
  • Ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with all staff members, agencies, volunteers, and donors
  • Ability to perform basic math functions, (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)
  • Ability to count accurately and maintain accurate records
  • Understands warehouse inventory

Work Environment & Physical Demands of PPC Lead

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift and/or and move 50 lbs. regularly and to push/pull 2,000lbs. of product using manual pallet jack.
  • Ability to speak clearly.
  • Ability to operate machine, mechanical, and electrical equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • This position is predominantly warehouse/ production based with primary activity in refrigerated or freezer environments.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Exposure to fumes/odors and dirt/dust.
  • Some exposure to outdoors (i.e. all-weather conditions) and office
  • Moving vehicles and equipment; Machinery/equipment in use.
  • Works well with others and independently.
  • Verbal face-to-face contact with others
  • Requires movement of product in-and-out of trailers and straight trucks.
