Overview

The Power Plant Operator is responsible for the safe and proper operation of the power plant and associated control structures. They operate, maintain and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, chillers, cooling towers, equipment for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, lighting and associated equipment in the facilities.

The Power Plant Operator makes periodic inspections of equipment and minor repairs to such equipment; perform preventive maintenance; take responsible charge of a watch, read meters, gauges, and other recording devices and log the data; keep records and write reports; as directed, inspect low and high-pressure boilers in accordance with a unified inspection procedure and may operate a motor vehicle.

The Power Plant Operator will be able to power down, inspect, trouble-shoot, repair and restore operation of medium to high pressure steam boilers. The Power Plant Operator may be assigned more complex repairs or to locations with high pressure steam systems.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Operate Facility Power Plant and Mechanical Equipment Operate the power plant and associated control structures in a safe and reliable manner. Support the continuous operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, and related facility equipment. Ensure equipment is operating within established parameters to maintain facility functionality.

Monitor Equipment Performance and Conditions Read and interpret meters, gauges, and other recording devices to track system performance. Perform periodic inspections of equipment to ensure proper operation and identify abnormalities. Observe operating conditions and take appropriate action to maintain safe and effective performance.

Troubleshooting, Adjustments, and Minor Repairs Identify operational issues in equipment and make necessary adjustments to restore proper function. Perform minor repairs on plant and facility equipment as needed. Assist in resolving equipment malfunctions to minimize disruption to facility operations.

Preventive Maintenance Activities Perform routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment. Support ongoing upkeep to ensure equipment reliability and longevity. Identify maintenance needs during inspections and address or report them appropriately.

Boiler Operation and Oversight Operate and monitor boilers and related systems as required. Assist with inspection and operational oversight of low and high-pressure boilers following established procedures. Support safe startup, shutdown, and operational monitoring of boiler systems.

Operational Monitoring and Watch Duties Take responsibility for assigned watch periods and ensure continuous oversight of plant operations. Maintain awareness of system conditions and respond to changes or alerts as needed.

Documentation and Reporting Record operational data from equipment readings and inspections in required logs. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and equipment performance. Prepare written reports regarding equipment condition or operational issues as directed.

Facility Support and Additional Duties Support general operation of facility systems related to heating, cooling, ventilation, and lighting. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervision.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION: High Schol Diploma or equivalent (higher degree accepted)

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Must have 3 years of relevant hands-on experience
