College Park, MD

$70K - $82K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Location: This role is based onsite at our headquarters in College Park, MD.
Travel: 10% - domestic
Job ID:
1746

The Role:

We are looking for a Senior Electronics Technician. As a Senior Electronics Technician, you'll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world's best quantum computers to solve the world's most complex problems.

In this role, you will be responsible for the high-precision assembly of our quantum computer control systems, focusing on PCBA preparation, electro-mechanical box builds, and full rack integration. You will work directly from schematics and assembly drawings to route complex wire harnesses, perform precision soldering modifications, and integrate custom electronics into rack systems, ensuring every connection meets our rigorous quality standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform precision through-hole and SMT assembly work-including the installation of standard components, jumpers, and mechanical hardware-while executing high-precision modifications, corrections, and circuit reworks on populated PCBs to strict IPC Class 3 high-reliability standards.
  • Execute mechanical and electrical assembly of custom control chassis, including mounting power supplies, integrating PCBs, and managing thermal interfaces.
  • Install electronic assemblies into 19" racks and perform system-level wiring; route, dress, and terminate complex cable harnesses with strict attention to strain relief and bend radius requirements.
  • Read and interpret detailed electrical schematics, wire lists, and mechanical assembly drawings to ensure accurate build configuration.
  • Capture redlines and document assembly best practices to improve build instructions; participate in 5S initiatives to maintain an organized, ESD-safe production environment.
  • Inspect own work and initiate Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for any material or process deviations, working with engineering to identify root causes.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 2-year technical degree (Electronics/Mechatronics) and 5+ years of hands-on experience in high-tech electronics manufacturing or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in IPC J-STD-001 (soldering) and IPC-A-610 (acceptability of electronic assemblies), including fine-pitch soldering and small gauge wire (28-32 AWG) handling.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude for box builds, using hand tools, crimpers, and torque drivers for precision assembly.
  • Ability to read and follow complex technical specifications, assembly drawings, and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience working in an ESD-controlled environment and familiarity with cleanroom protocols.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with excellent fine motor skills for handling small components and delicate wiring.
  • Proficiency with digital documentation tools (Google Sheets, MS Office) for data collection and reporting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • IPC/WHMA-A-620 certification or significant experience in cable and wire harness assembly.
  • Experience supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) builds and providing Design for Manufacturing (DFM) feedback to engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing systems such as Netsuite MRP, MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), PLM (Arena/Agile), and Jira.
  • Experience with cryogenic system wiring or vacuum compatible cabling.
  • Previous experience in aerospace, defense, or medical device manufacturing where high-reliability standards are paramount.

The approximate base salary range for this position is $70,852 - $82,661. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, equity, and a range of benefit options found on our career site.
